how to safely put sand in freshwater tanks?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Place in container like 5 gal bucket, fill will scalding hot water and half a cap of bleach (not the scented kind) stir it around with cooking spoon or something similar, dump the water and rinse it a few more times to get the bleach out. Then rinse again and dose a dechlor like prime in the bucket, stir around dump water and rinse one last time.

This way you kill any and all bacteria, algae, fungus and whatever else is on that sand from the beach and all the small debris rinses out. The dechlor will neutralize the bleach so no worries.

Better to he safe then sorry imo. If your going to take decor from nature such as dw, rocks, sand etc you better make damn sure its aquarium safe. But I highly value all my fish so that's just me.

Easiest way for me was to wash the sand out really well in the bag(might take a little longer to rinse) then take the whole bag and sit in inside the aquarium water once it's at the bottom pore it out slowly with one hand while using the other spread it around.
