Some pics of the elusive grammodes

Beautiful Grammode. He is not of fan of being seen, you can tell by how dark he is making himself. Definitely stressed. Enjoy him, and keep him forever. I wish I would of had more patience with mine, they grow so slow, so I made a hasty decision that I regret today.
He is a shy guy, but still has an interesting personality. I plan on keeping him forever you hardly ever see big ones.
Love Grammodes, but dang they grow sooooo slow... I had to sell mine as the other fish were out growing him so quickly. Pretty mean too!!
I don't mind the slow growth it gives me more time to figure out where I'm going to put him.
How's the aggression in that tank?
Beautiful gramodes!

Very Nice man I am thinking on getting another one lately as well. I have not had them for about 4 years now. I love these fish yours is very nice looking love his blues in fins

Thanks, I love them too and the rest of the "grammodes complex"; I have all three not sure which is my favorite though.

istlanum, beani, and grammodes

Ok, you just meant Cichlasoma. Get it, never heard it referred to as the "grammode complex".

I have had Grammode and Istlanum, but my grammode was only 5'' when i sold him. I never got to see him in his prime. My Istlantum is a 10'' monster that when I purchased him and another male grammode at the same time, my istlantum doubled the Grammode in size, in the first 6 months. So I had to get rid of one, and i figured I would try the Istlantum this time. But I love both, I think I tend to lean towards a full grown Grammode though. They have that unique dovii esq body type.
I have never owned a Beanii, but I would kill to own a white one, with those honeycomb patterns, they are stunning. But I find it strange that they are in the same genus, because the grow so much larger than Grammode or Istlantum, and they don't really look like a miniature version of any cichlid. They seem to be in a family of their own. They must just lump them into the same genus because they live in the same waters.

I also find the lumping strange on the Beani part. Now between the three at any size in a fight hahaha (yes taking it there lol) I take Grammodes every time. Beani I don't respect lol and Istlanum are very nasty, but they do not hold a candle in my opinion to the nastiness of the Grammodes. Which is why besides their better color I choose this one

Between the grammode and istlantum, let me tell you that it is a absolute toss up. Both are nasty mother f'ers and tbh my istlantum was to much for my grammode. But the istlantum had the size advantage like i mentioned before. Now on to your statement about Beanii,
you are in for quite a surprise. Beanii may very well be the nastiest fish alive. They are notorious for how mean they are as well as there fighting abilities. Not that I condone it, but here is proof of how serious a Beanii is, this one takes down a large Dovii, Butti, and Midevil no problem.

They are very nasty fish. And they get huge as well.

+1 meanest fish I have ever owned

Yeah circumstantial though some what impressive. That was the Beani's tank and turf. Dropping another big bad fish in there and having it get hammered on before it can properly acclimate and adjust you can get the same effect vis versa with all those species. I've seen African cichlids beat the sh*# out of Flowerhorn, Oscars and many other large cichlids under the same circumstances.

He just introduced that beani to the Dovii tank. The dovii was already living in the tank, not the beanii. Even more impressive.
