Male Green Texas "Rio Hondo" X female synspila "belize"

Both from Dan at Cichlids Of The Americas, both are approximately 5" long. This guy didn't play nice with others until he saw this particular syn. They flare & display, dig pit's & clean potential spawn sites together, clearly very well bonded.

Sorry for the crappy pics, my camera is ancient.

I love them too, can't wait 'til they spawn!
I have several fish in this size range right now, pink fenestratus "Lago Catemaco", more synspila, a female "Rio Hondo", a female blood parrot. The goal is creating fortune fish, at the moment I'm working on pairing up a few more hybrid pairs, the most promising seems to be a male pink fenestratus and a female synspila. Also have hopes for my smallest pink fen male X female carpintis.

Sounds like you got it figured out. You just have to hope the right fish pair up. How many setups do you have to raise these spawns?

Currently I have two 40 breeders, three 55 gallons, a 50ish gallon corner tank, and a 75 gallon at my disposal. At the end of December I'll be moving, at that point I'll either get a few 100+ gallon tanks, or a few indoor ponds....very possibly both.
As for what direction this project goes, I only have it partially figured out, lol! I'm just sort of waiting to see what the fish want, then I'll go from there.
Very interested in the fader gene in the pink fenestratus, tons of questions I'd like to answer...like, is it a dominant gene? Is it genetically compatible with the fader gene from Amphilophus and or bp?

Mind you, I'll be selling off unpaired fish as I go, I figure when I get 1-2 more pairs I'll start running auctions on aquabid. The same goes for any pure pairs that form, for example I have a male & female syn that only liked each other, despite the fact I've tried them both repeatedly with various other species.

It's about to get even more interesting. My step brother has recently partnered up with me in my endeavors, right now he's on his way home from an lfs expedition to another town south of us. He picked some nice creamsicle midevils and a jack dempsey to try with my unpaired fish. VERY excited now, woohoo!
