Hi guys, how are you?

Anyone with experience in grow speed of Hoplias curupira or Hoplias malabaricus? I'm thinking about a wolf (with a true wolf face for my tank so erythrinus and hoplerythrinus are not my first choice). I know that both hoplias can outgrow my other fishes (aces, Sabbetooth, hujeta)...but...I just want to keep for a while, after that I will send the fishes to another HUGE tank. What do you think? What is my best bet?

Thks

D.

With the amount my erythrinus gets intrigued by flashy moving fish, I don't think a hoplias would do well with those fish.. an awful lot of them would get eaten I feel if the size difference wasn't in the other characins favor, or the tank was choked out for a while with some dithers

Hi Buffalo, thanks for your reply. I thinking in a 2-3 inches hoplias. I really dont know how fast this guys grow and how much time to be bigger than my kudas. Do you have any knowledge about that?

D.

A friend had a Mala that made it from 4 inch to 12 inch in less then 6 months, idk about curus but if its similar your stock will be in trouble! Id go for a gold hoplery if i were you. He also had it on pellets, on a daily feeding schedule. So that may have helped him gain that size that quickly, thats my only personal experience with any Hoplias growth rates and its nuts. I almost picked up one of those Iguazu from Wes and im glad i didnt haha half my stock would be dead by now

Curupiras are generally more active than malas so they tend to swim more. this could be a problem since it might try to chase the tankmates around more than a mala. A mala on the other hand is usually a living rock that stay in one spot unless there is easy food around.

I've personally kept a Curupira with Cichlids, Armatus and Gars with virtually no problems. Matter of fact the Curupira was 8 inches when I got him and was kept in a tank by himself till I got him and the only problem I ever encountered was an accidental amputation of the Armatus dorsal fin by the Curupira. They where being fed and in an attempt to reach the food first the Curupira accidentally snapped the Armatus dorsal off along with the food that was falling toward the Arm. Luckily Amrs are like SD's at least as far as fin growth and the dorsal completely regrew as if nothing happened and in record time. That was the first and only incident until I sold the Wolf at 12-14 inches.

As such in my experience they comm. fairly well, though I will admit I've only kept one Curupira to date so my experience is based on that one so I can't speak in definitive's about them as a whole. I can only say that I've seen others on here state that Curupiras are pretty calm and are one of the better comm'ing wolves. I'll also add that lix. max is correct as they're one of the more active wolves, which in my opinion makes them even more attractive a wolf to get. He was often given to short patrols of the tank and was a avid watcher of me at my computer. He used to sit there for hours sometimes hovering other times resting while moving at odd angles to get a better look at me, almost like he was trying to figure me out.

Hi Buffalo...if the growth rates are so big I will have to reconsider my acquisition. Hoplerithrinus are completely out of question, they are very agressive fishes and IMHO they don't have a "monster face" that i´m searching, my friend has 7 and I saw how much problematic is to keep this guys with other no-agressive fishes.

Hi lix, how are you? I read about the curupira activity and mala's lazyness and this is a very important point. I like active fishes but maybe a lazy fish will be better. I like malas face more than curupira face but I like curupiras colors much more than malas color! I need both!!!! :-)

Hi kolt, how are you? Thanks for your imput! How much time do you keep your curupira? What can you say about growing rates? Do you keep her with smaller fishes?

Thank you guys!

Your welcome, the Curupiras growth rate was pretty fast in my experience for a fish that was already large, he probably put on approx. 4 inches in a year and was fed Hikari stuffed market shrimp. I did keep him with fish smaller than him length wise but these same fish where deeper bodied than him despite the less length. For example I kept a 6 inch Bocourti with him with no issues.

I think you need to be careful the advice given about Hoplias.

I've only owned the big guys - Aimara and Lacerdae. The Lac is 5+ years old and only about 18-19". I acquired the Aimara at about 6", have had him a few years now and he's only 13". These guys are in a tank of rays so there's a ridiculous amount of food offered regularly, and the growth rate has been significantly less then some of the growth rates mentioned in this thread.

I wouldn't be surprised if a Curupira would work with Cudas long term if the sizes were right. Not sure how big the species of Cudas you have get but I don't think Curus get very big, although, like I mentioned I have no experience with them, only the larger guys, but I can tell you that they definitely are much more passive in regards to tank mates then their stereo type leads on.....

x2 I agree I currently have a 13"+ curupira that has been in communities since he was 3" without any problems. The growth rate was about 1in a month to about 9-10in then it slowed down.....Imo if you keep it fed a curupira would be fine for a while but not for life. The only fish I've owned that the wolf didn't like was a vulture cat.
