New baby Delhezi - food advice

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They are pretty neat. My delhezi just all of a sudden came to life today. I haven't had him for a week quite yet and he spends most of his time just hiding. Today as soon as the mysis hit the tank he came out pectoral fins running 100 mph and for the last hour or so he's been going nuts all over the tank. He even started picking on my green terror a little bit.

Back to food topic... I have used the Hikari Sinking Carnivore pellet. Just have to break it up and the little guy just attacks the stuff. I also use NLS 3mm sinking. For treats I use frozen beef heart, tilapia fillets, earthworms/chopped up nightcrawlers. The del has grown very fast compared to my other bichirs. They are good eaters!

I still haven't seen my little guy actively go out for food yet. I know he's eating but he's not aggressive and doesn't go running for mysis or sinking pellets when I drop them in. I'm thinking it's because he's still new to my tank.

Go figure as soon as I post this I drop carnivore pellets in and the two synodontis are fighting over one playing tug of war and the delhezi comes up and rips it away from them and takes off.

Just wanted to post an update. Had him a little over a month. He's about 4.5" now and putting on some girth finally.

Be careful about overfeeding! Some bichirs just don't know when to stop lol that's a good growth rate

Mine doesn't really eat that much to be honest. He eats maybe 1 or 2 sinking carnivore pellets a day. Other than that he might scavenge off the bottom the rest of the time. I think his growth is mostly from my mixed diet: bloodworms, mysis shrimp, carnivore pellets, and I do 50% water changes weekly.

Just words of cautions they will eat anything even if it doesn't fit in there mouth. I lost one about that size earlier this week due to trying to eat some market shrimp too big for him and, ended belly up because of it.
