So after my old man Piranha, Pete, died last week, I decided I needed to get a shoal of babies.. I used a stand I already had to save money, bought a brand new 75g glass aquarium, and found where I'm getting them! I'm using sand, treated tap water, currently a single powerhead, and a single Penguin 350 Marineland filter. I'm either gonna use my canister on it or by a second Penguin. The sand I bought was high pH, so I used a pH buffer to keep it as neutral as possible and I'll be adding that about once a month or with water changes because it is also a conditioner. If I should do that differently, please let me know! Also, I added a normal dose of salt..

I'm buying 6 baby red bellies for $100 Monday from a local guy so no shipping charges or hassle. I'm hoping that atleast 5 will live, and at very minimum 4. If I'm lucky, he might toss me a 7th free...

I still need more wood and plans and I'm picking it all up tomorrow so I'll have updated pictures. I'm open to any suggestions and helpful tips as well! The tank has been running a couple weeks now and the filter and water was previously established in a 56g so only about 20, 25 gallons was new water to start. I'm using a 24 inch LED because it adds a good amount of light I feel like, but not way too much. Keep it slightly dim..

nice! it's always fun growing out babies, but i'd be worried about the tank overhang on each side of the stand. i've heard the bulk of the weight is carried on the corners. i could be wrong though.

he should give you a 7th free cuz that price seems high to me but i know that varies by location. i know aquascapeonline is out right now but they do 1 inchers 12 for 50 bucks plus shipping.

I'm not too worried. I've done tanks like this before and never had issues, but I might just add some wood supports or steel. It's not like a show tank and I want the actual tank to be the real attention grabber as well.

Tank looks great! I think a flat black background would look good. It's what I do to all my tanks. Keeps them looking clean without all the cords hanging in the back. Also, I've heard salt isn't really needed for piranhas, only if they've got a sickness or healing issues is when it should be used.

Update with some pictures when you get the baby reds!

your tank is very beautiful and good looking, but I have a this kinda idea
if you get 7 RBP, the tank is not enough for them, they may live there for about 6-8 months
and then you have to buy them a new tank about 150g if all 7 survived.

even 5 survived, you need a tank more than 100g. So my idea is, it is always better to buy a big tank which can house them for life at first.
I don't know what is the situation there in the US, but here it is not easy to resell an old tank,
when selling an old tank, people want it for about half price of the brand new.

Piranhas are predatory schooling fish, so giving them less space is something like that you are asking them to fight with each others.
I have a friend who has 16 years old 4 RBPs, she raised them from juveniles, and she thinks, an adult piranha needs 25g of water alone to keep him healthy and less aggressive towards the other piranhas in the tank.

Probably your tank is a "NO GO" for 7 RBPs.
If you buy 7RBPs and give them enough space, they will all survive without cannibalism.

Yeah that's a good point. Maybe 3 or 4 and cross my fingers that they don't kill each other is a better route.
