my dad just bought me a bichir . what should i do ? O.O

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
so when they are stress they wont eat right? how long will it get use to his new tank? now he just likes to sit on the bottom low corner. and should i change the water? it's a bit cloudy.

You should ask for a test kit for your birthday.

Cloudy water is not a good thing. I would not change the water. Cloudy water is a sign that something is wrong.

I'm guessing you recently set up the tank and added all the tilapia fry? That caused an ammonia spike because there is no biological filter established.

What do you know about the nitrogen cycle?

^ I missed the cloudy water part. Yes change the water, clean the bottom of the tank and check perameters to make sure the tank is cycled. A cycled tank and clean, clean water is very important always. If you have a problem get some Seachem Stability to add to the tank to help it cycle.

okay sure. it's been a while since i haven't clean my sand. lol and ill make sure tht it's cycled. at first, i wanted to put it with my 3inch, almost-4" oscar. but im afraid tht it might think i'm giving him a worm. hahah so i just put it in my growout 30g. i have an empty 100g though.

Sounds like your tank is not cycled. Running a fish tank empty for weeks does nothing. You need the production of ammonia to kick start a cycle.

Research 'nitrogen cycle' and 'how to properly cycle a new aquarium'. All fish keepers need to learn this info it's very important to keeping fish alive.

I would recommend you go buy a bunch of live aquatic plants like java fern and anacharis which will help establish a biological filter. The more plants the better.

If you have any other fish tanks, take a couple hand fulls of substrate from the older tank and add it to this new tank.

oh noo, soo, should i let the bichir in the tank, or should i put it in my 65 with my oscar? btw, thanks for the info, but unfortunately, lfs in my place doesnt sell those types of plants, only fake ones, but i do have some floating plants. can i use them?

Yes you can use them, or some established media from another tank (floss, bio-media etc) to get it going. I would not put it with the O at this size or the O will try to eat it. a test kit is important too when setting up a new tank so you can monitor the progress. The quickest way is to use filter media and/or some established sustrate as suggested from a cycled tank. Do daly water changes while monitoring perameters and use some stability if you can get it, it will help.

So he probably has a water problem and he should not change the water with some good fresh water?? Even if its going through a cycle he needs to change water in the system.

Do not go adding a bunch of plants or other stuff, just change the water every other day for the next 2 weeks or so and that should give it time to cycle and setup.
