  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
if you have to ask ...............

try "hose and bucketing" 100 gallons of water 2 to 3 times a week through your house and get back to me.
Been doing water changes with a hose and bucket on over 30+ tanks changing 100s of gallons of water each week for over 30 years. I speak from experience - gunga din LOL!

Congratulations. Whats your point? All that time and effort could have been cut in half with a python, and nearly eliminated altogether with this technology. Just because you're set in your ways doesn't entitle you to bash his.

Amen, congratulations on taking 30 years to not learn what most people with big tanks learn very quickly...

rban, that TDS meter looks amazing, I had no idea so many cool gadgets existed! Who cares if you can keep and breed discus in a bare tank with a sponge filter, this aquarium is going to be amazing and by the sounds of it completely maintenance free to boot.

So some rich dude buys all kinds of expensive gadgets for a 300 gallon aquarium and you all go gaga over it. Yes, all is well in the fish world. LOL!

This is just sad to read. I hope you're truely as young and immature as you sound. But I guess carrying buckets for 30 years cursing the witchcraft that is a python tends to make people bitter...

Edit: Just wanted to point out the irony of someone bashing this amazing setup on MONSTERFISHKEEPERS. If this was a 5gallon bucket forum I could understand the hostility

Joe Jaskot, you're flaunting your ignorance. We're all in this hobby for enjoyment. I find it a lot more enjoyable when I don't have to light around buckets of water, and I really like taking on technical projects, so this thread is really interesting to me. He isn't doing it based on your idea of practicality, he is doing it for enjoyment. If you don't have any relevant input, move on.

There are no fish - healthy or otherwise - in rbarn's set-up, so declaring this set-up "perfect" seems far from appropriate.

It's his set-up, his time and his money, so it's his prerogative to knock himself out.

All of the gizmos, gadgets and other stuff is completely unnecessary. All of it represents opportunities for the system to fail, have problems or otherwise introduce issues that wouldn't be part of a simpler approach.

Weekly maintenance of a similar-sized tank takes me ~15 minutes per week using a 1" siphon to my deep sink (it hangs on the side of the tank and drains to the sink)...a garden hose from the sink to the tank to refill (it hangs on the side of the tank)...dumping and replacing the fluff (mechanical media) in my dump filter...and cleaning the glass with a magnet cleaner.

This is a proven approach to aquarium maintenance. I'd like to see what's come of what's being built here after 5 or 10 years of operation...

Matt

I have been watching this thread as it has progressed, and I have to say, people need to learn to shut up sometimes. This thread is in no way about simplicity like "a hose and bucket" or the "KISS principle". It is about sparing no expense and fully automating and perfecting a beautiful setup. I love watching what amazing equipment some geniuses have created for hobbyists to utilize. So please, sit back and enjoy the interesting, less common approach of fishkeeping. Not to mention, rather than calling it excessive, why not give props for all of the work and effort that rbarn is putting in to research and bring together this dream of his?

It's being built to commercial grade filter specs. If you guys cant see or understand that, that's fine. I'm not doing anything that is not already done by people than run public aquariums and fish farms. No one bothers to do it on a "home aquarium" (except for the reef-junkies) because it's insanely expensive and time consuming. All components being used are "professional" grade and should last for decades of trouble free use.

I enjoy this post, sure I would not go out and spend the money on all the gear, more tanks for me haha but its still nice.

But it is your tank and your dream so I dont know why people have to have a negative attitude towards it, sure its overkill and some may see it a waste of money but thats your choice and if they cant respect it dont comment or look at the post its not rocket science. I am sure rbarn gets fed up hearing all this crap when his investing an awful lot of time and money into his dream so if you dont support it shuu.

And a lot of people will also argue we dont need such large aquariums to keep fish and we are crazy for doing so + wasting our money, yet we still do it why? its enjoyed by the individual. Everyone gets there kick out of life from doing different things theres no need to judge. We should be thankful the work is being shared with us in such great detail.
