IMO it depends on species, their max size, growth rate etc.., It seems that weeksii seem to keep their external gills longer than any other polys. They are also in some peoples experiences very slow growing, but they get pretty big. So it depends on the species. What species do you have?okay, how long would the gills start to come off?
tht long? how come he still have it?
yes they do
Most polys have their external gills start to go away at a very young age. By the time they are caught in the wild or being sold from the vender to the LFS they have already lost themI have 3 bichirs that were all 2-3 inches when I bought them and none of them ever had the external gills.

my weeksi was kinda strange. it never grew for the 2 years that I had him. I got him at 4 inches or so and after 2 years, it was roughly 5.5 inches. By then a weeksi should push one feet.
i have no idea what was wrong. He was wild caught I fed him food each day and did a 50% WC each weeksi. He was in a 75 gallon tank. i assume he was a dwarf or runt since I got a 4 inch weeksi in a pile of 10 inchers.
i sold him about 2 months ago.
yeah endlis at small sizes like you have seem to keep their external gills longer than mostoh okay, i currently have an endli . now im planning to have some senegals.
