Is there ANY legal snakeheads in the U.S.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yup, its been a long time since the last legal snakehead has died and to my knowledge, nobody's breeding rainbow snakeheads in Maryland. As for your "friend" keeping an illegal snakehead species, I hope he keep his fish hidden from the feds and he is expecting you to keep his secret stay secret.....because nobody likes an expensive fine and possible facing a jail time.

I'm curious as to how the government can stop people from keeping them. Since snakeheads have already populated a lot of lakes in the states, how can they stop people from just going to a lake, catching one, then bringing it home?

Very true. Piranha are illegal in Cali but I could probably with a little effort go find some should I want to(I don't want to)

Actually, they don't populated that much in United States, but there are lot of lakes and river systems that the snakeheads don't invade yet just like Asian carps and zebra mussels. Our only goal is slow down the spreading. Jail time and fines will stop most people from bring a live snakehead home. It's not "oops I made a lame mistake" crime, it's more like a very serious crime. Last summer we stopped an individual with a boat trailer that was about entering in a lake free of aquatic invasive species, we found a live adult zebra mussel and some spiny water fleas in the livewell. The boater got fined with $1,200.

ALOT? Last time I checked, they are confirmed in few states and in few river systems. The snakehead populations in Florida and Arkansas doesn't spread that much.

I did a research paper on this a couple semesters ago and I found that there were actually quite a few states that had snakeheads in their lakes and rivers. There was even a population somewhere in Canada. I'll try to find the article(s). I just gotta try and remember what I actually typed in to find it.
