Hybrid egg laying female question...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes sometimes the female may not let the male do his thing right and that could have been part of the issue it does happen. I had a pure festae pair lay three batches of eggs earlier this year and none got fertilized, because the female laid in a big clay pot which she defended like crazy, and never let the male get in to do his business. After the third try he was so pissed off he tried killing her and everything else in the tank so now he chills alone hahah

Thanks for your input also. This is her now a days...

i think if you get that female to spawn with my male you will get that speckling everyone is looking for he seems to throw speckled off spring in the past

I agree he makes some beautiful off spring. Even if he only gets to fertilize 25% of the eggs... They will be very well worth my time to raise. I'll keep in touch Dial92...

Well fellas... I sucessfully acquired the big Carpintis from Dial92(Thank you). She layed eggs twice but they weren't officially ever "paired" up. I made another thread http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?564742-I-thought-they-were-paired-up. But I'm updating this one to say I'm retiring this female lol. Its not her fault he don't like her(well it might be lol) but I won't be trying to find her another mate. I'm also going to say you fellas that give these hybrids 3 shots have more patience than I do. Its also because I have other siblings to check for fertility. But I have another bp/carpintis female(also a fader) that had a spawn with another one of my carpintis's male about a month ago... Yup sterile eggs again. I want to say I have never had two pure fish spawn and nothing become of the eggs. I've spawned Jags, cons, red devil/midevils, carpintis, and bp/carpintis with no failed spawns so these spawns are very frustrating to me. So fellas when it comes to these first generation bp/carpintis hybrids... I'm pretty sure they can be sterile(IME). Lol

You might be overlooking the possible problem of it being her not her fertility. I have had terrible mother cichlids during the egg stage like the more common bad parent during the wiggler stage. What i mean is they may be good and are going bad because she is not caring for them constantly. Many flowerhorns are like this and one of the reasons they are spawned in dishes so eggs can be removed and incubated artificially away from parents. Have you tried this yet with her?

No I haven't tried that but thank you for the encouragement to keep trying. If he accepted her and they were actually paired I would give her another shot but they aren't paired. When she was paired with the first male that she had 3 spawns with, she fanned the eggs very well. If you look at the last pic that I showed of them you can even see that there wasn't any fungus that got to any of the eggs... They just weren't fertile.
Now I have this other bp/carpintis paired with a male carpintis and the first spawn was also a failure(this is the other pair I spoke of earlier). Her eggs were fanned by her and also didn't grow fungus but not 1 egg was fertilized... Same situation. I am patient enough to give her one more shot since they are paired. I will post pics of the pair later today.
