Finally got pics of my JAG

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
not very clear and s/he is still young, but i would guess it's a male. It has great coloration either way.

I started keeping jags myself. They're so awesome.

Some of the ones you find at the LFS, like Petland, often have muted colors.

That's a wild male from a lake in Nicaragua and a Petland female. He's about 10" she's about 6.5"
She is still beautiful, I will probably get him a wild female as a mate and pass her along to my friend.
(How snobbish of me, I know. She too inbred!) Actually, she's completely fearless . She attacks when I rearrange the tank, each nip removes a little piece of my skin, so the next day there's a red mark there. I try not to let her bite bc it hurts a little...but she can be relentless.
So great character.. and she is totally in love with this male. So we'll see what happens.

Colors can vary quite a bit under different lighting situations as well. Sometimes the edges of the fins look blue-green, other times black.

heres my male from petland discounts. I bought him as a 1 inch baby hes 7 inches in this pic. the OP has a male I could almost guarantee cuz mine looked exactly like his at that size and it has the face of a male already. dont let noone belittle petland(this guy just thinks his wild fish is superior, understandable im sure he payed a fine price for the bragging right) most of those fish from petland come from Singapore and other foreign places where they are selectively bred carefully then shipped to retail petstores in large orders. I used to work in petland.I know were my fish came from. and if you see a jag at petland with "washed out" colors its not inbreeding dummy its poor conditions. my friend had a beautiful petland jag he raised, he gave it back to the store for store credit and the minute it hit the tank in the store its colors went from great to washed out and stayed that way the whole time it was there. when jags are stressed the colors wash out temporarily. and females almost always look drab its just the way it is, they are the more undesireable of the the two sexes for that reason. schooled photo 1-2.JPG

looks like a female to me, pretty jag tho

In my opinion ,Looks like a young male (based on its structure)...just with a lot more of a black blots pattern than most.. Don't judge a jag just by its spots....lol Their pattern can look different for various reasons..... Here's male not looking like he normally does....

Does appear to be male but looks stressed, probably still settling in to his new tank. Definitely post more pics when he settles in and you're able to get some better pics.

Nice looking fish..but I wouldnt generalize about the quality (in terms of inbred generations) of fish found in a huge chain like Petland. They certainly dont 'import their fish from Singapore' as a matter of course.; it is extremely expensive to ship fish internationally. '..cichlids inbred for four and five generations exhibited moderate and severe morphological deformities'.*

Whether the 'washed out' look of these particular fish is the result of that I cannot say for sure but would guess it is as I've not seen them so pale in the wild. I saw males from the same batch as this female and they are equally pale. It has nothing to do with the water quality, -the guy that runs the store does a tip-top job.

They certainly dont 'import their fish from Singapore' as a matter of course.; it is extremely expensive to ship fish internationally. Repeated inbreeding,, -which happens in captive fish stocks, at F4 or 5,, results in all manner of undesirable traits. (I posted on this a few days ago, with citations). More likely than not, I would guess it has to do with repeated pairings of related offspring.
yes I understand but you cant just go around deeming other peoples jags inbred just because you had the privelage to cop a wild strain. you cant be definitive in your statements unless u know exactly what someone has. some jags from petstores may be f1 or f2 who really knows ya know
