i found a 240 gallon acrylic tank for sale and am seriously debating buying it, but i believe it to be a saltwater type setup. its got a sump with it and i am unfamiliar with sump setups. this particular tank has never been setup and it has over flows as well. so can i set it up as a freshwater tank and use my 2- fx5's on it? any help and or advice will be greatly appreciated..

Yes.

Its not a saltwater tank until you add saltwater.

thanks xraycer, i figured as much, just curious about the sump, i have personally never used a sump on a freshwater tank, i am assuming it will be ok? never set one up like that either not really sure how to either, kinda trying to get some advice on setting it up befote i buy it

Picture would greatly help. Most likely the overflows are in the 2 back corners. Sump is basically a canister without the full enclosement. If you want, you can cap off the overflow and just hook up the FXs like you would normally, or do research on sump and take advantage of this feature.

People always try to sell a tank for more by labeling it as a saltwater tank

ok cool, yeah he didnt label it as saltwater, i just assumed because of the sump setup and over flows, guess i just assumed people didnt use that type of setup on freshwater tanks

Do research and use the sump instead of the canisters. Easier maintenance. Better oxygenation, can hold much more biomedia depending on size. Throw you heaters inside instead of main tank. Once you use the sump setup you won't ever want to use a canister again

Just know that acrylic is susceptible to scratches, so extra needs to be taken when cleaning it. Therefore, really inspect the tank and be sure that you can live with any scratches that exists, if any. GL

thanks i will definetly look into this

I would suggests you start off with your canisters and convert to sump filtration once and/or if you're comfortable.

Have the owner fill that tank entirely for you to inspect. If he's not willing, walk away.
