Crenicichla Notophthalmus have bred for me

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What's the pH and hardness at? I never got any breeding behavior with mine, but I kept them in our tap water which here is about 6.7 pH and pretty soft. I never got them into their own tank where I could do up a proper blackwater tank like yours. Still darn impressive, they are the hardest dwarves to bred water wise.

My tap water is also pretty soft. PH at 7.2 KH 2 GH 3 The ph in the tank is at 5.5. There is no hardness. I'm lucky enough to have a lot of oak trees in my backyard. All the wood except one piece in the tank, came from my backyard. I put DI water into a 55 gallon drum. In the drum I have a large piece of oak, oak leaves and a bag of peat moss. The water ages for a few days. That's the water I use. In addition to the oak in the tank , there are oak leaves and peat moss in the filter.

I fed them very well. Lots of bloodworms, Mysis shrimp, freeze dried krill and some live guppies. They wont eat pellets or flakes. Hopefully I'll get them to eat them soon.

Beautiful awesomeness of unparalleled wowfactoryness!!! LOVE IT!!! That is top notch spectacular, congrats!!!

Are they solo in the tank? Gotta love the tannin natural look. Keep it up!!

Thanks. I started them by themselves in there. She laid eggs in November. But they never hatched. Afterward, the male was very nasty toward her. She was always in a corner or hiding behind something. I put in 7 2" Silver dollars about a month or so ago and the next day they were hanging together. His attention turned towards the silver dollars and he didn't bother her at all. I removed them yesterday after the par stated moving the fry from the cave the spawned in.

No way I can't believe this.. C. Notophthalmus are on the top of my fish list right now. I have been emailing people all over the country. Can you PM me where you bought them from?

Huge accomplishment my friend. You do the exact same system I do for my apistos and that's what I was planning on doing if I got notophthalmus.
