5 inch cuban i had for a few months now. i bought him at 1 inch .im hoping for a male. this is my favorite fish next to my jag, its super super fiesty. he/she doesnt even take crap from my jag. he tail whips my jag whos 4-5 inches bigger and flares at my firemouth like every 20 minutes (it never gets out of hand though) lol the fish you see in these pics are all i have in my 125. idk if the aggression level helps determine sex. but id love input

my guess is female as it does not large spot on its side, but that is not a 100 % looking at the reproductive area is best. but i have owned a male and he was lighter and had black blotches on its side as seen in pictures i posted . your darkness could be a little bit of stress also

cant be stressed he was this color even when alone

My guess would be fem based on solid color of dorsal. But then I'm still pretty new to Cubans

by the looks of your other picture i am 100% it is female.. find a nice male and have fun with them mine was ultra aggressive.i had to find him a new home :( he was 8 " when i got rid of him

i posted a venting thread. im really hoping for a male. only thing is it is very aggressive all the female fish i ever had wer relaxed and passive and also all my female fish wer ultra interested in my male fish they would cling. this fish is a loner to the tee. i would thing if its a she she would be more interested in my stud of a male jag, these fish hybridize all the time right?

No lol. Its not that easy to pair two separate species. I've had male and females of the same species and they could care less about each other, I've also had evil females of many species. My current female Dempsey for one is way more aggressive then the male. Its probably a female based on what it's showing color wise

oh ok. i respect ur opinion. the only difference online i see in cubans is that the famales look more slender and petite but mine for his size is nott that. like i said i respect all ur opinions but i hope its male. so mike u think its a definite female? also mike check out the vent in my other thread if u can

I agree that it appears female, by the dark area in the dorsal, that is, if it is a pure Nandopsis tetracanthus. As for aggressiveness, any of the females I have had, were not passive fish, they need to be able to deal with much larger males which call for some spunk.

female above, male below, note the dark female dorsal

and as for a mild mannered female
