My First Jaguar Cichlid!(need some advice!)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
1. My Jag is 13+ after 6 years
2. I don't know but I imagine they both are aggressive
3. My Jag was the size of a dime when it killed the three times it's size orange Cichlid that was in the tank with it. Mind you it was only in the tank for a day! We didn't know what type of fish it was till it killed the other fish and I looked into it. I now keep Mags in a 75 gallon tank alone. I feed pellets and keep my fingers out of the tank!!! Lol Good luck! They are amazing!

Hey guys, he is now in a 30-40 gallon growout with my juvenile oscar and red tail catfish hybrid. He does not seem to have grown more then half an inch and i have never actually seen him eat... Sometimes he is out but as soon as he sees me he darts away quickly.. Are juveniles usually this timid?

Yes the timidity is normal being in with those two it may not be getting adequate food.

Mine is 3.5-4" and is still very timid of me. Except at feeding time. Other than feeding time I have to sit in the room with the lights off and try not to move to much and then he is out in about. He is just this week becoming more aggressive and territorial with the other fish. I have mine with an Oscar, JD, and Firemouths. I hope you have a pond ready for your RTC

Jags are super timid and pretty ugly until about 5-6"... then all of a sudden their personality changes almost overnight and they become the most bada$$ fish in your tank. Once u start seeing the gill flares it's all over for the next dominant fish

also when do they develop a nice better pattern? mine has little patterns but they are not cool looking yet...

this was mine at around 3 inches with his natural gold colorlittlejag2.JPG
here he is at around 5 inchesjag 7 6 13.png
and this is him now at 9 inches. he lightened up more when i changed to white sandphoto-2.JPG

this was him around a year ago so you get an idea of how fast these fish transform 419570A5-4256-4515-AB3A-5A0C0FF1477B.jpeg

I've found that some cichlids I've kept have been extremely shy in smaller tanks but once they have more room, they've become less shy. Do u have at least 1 good hiding spot for each fish? I would say there's either not enough hiding spots or just the lack of swimming space since its in a smaller growout tank. Some fish feel threatened also when we get close to the tank because they relate anything over the top of them to predatory birds and other things they encounter in the wild, so it could just be its natural instincts kicking in as well. He or she should grow out of it at some point, if u can get it to start growing.

I had him/her by itself in a divided 40 gallon oscar tank (oscar had 30 gallons jag had 10) so he was alone then and still very shy... I am pretty sure he could see the oscar through the divider though... Also mine has NO black dots down his back... He has a really ugly pattern... Will that change over time? (Not saying he is ugly... Just nowhere near as good as other jags i see..)

ALSO, he was sold as a "GREEN JAGUAR CICHLID" could this be why he has weird patterns? Is there even a such thing as a green jaguar cichlid?

No such thing as a green jag that I've heard. The pattern will change as they grow my boy started out a dark ugly thing but he's stunning now.

I was told mine was a "different type of Managuense" but they didn't know what kind. Turns out he was just displaying a different color at the time. He looks like a typical Managuense now. I figured this was the case but I didn't care i liked the way he looks. Stores do that to spark interest.
