My First Jaguar Cichlid!(need some advice!)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
1. Really fast IME.

2. Highly on both. My 12 female thinks nothing about consuming 6-7" tank mates in a 210

3. Huge voracious eaters from wigglers on. Always a huge appetite.

65 gallons will last a bit but that'll be tight for life. My female is borderline in a 75/90. These fish need at least a 6' tank as adults.

My female is super interactive. Very Amph like. She's our water dog for sure but she also dominates every tank she's been in from 75 all the way up to the 300

I agree with richkid I would avoid feeding live to your Jaguar as well. Not much nutritional value is going to be gained. Better to feed pellets but also frozen food as well, krill is great for enhancing the coloration of your Jaguar. Just to add a little about their aggression; they can be really nasty cichlids but do not be surprised if he is shy and not banging the glass. I have had at least 7-8 Jags and the biggest that I had grown them to was about 14" none of them ever attacked me through the glass. Jaguars are not generally brutes like Amphilophus species (i.e. midas, red devil, etc) and their big cousin the dovii. Your best bet to get that kind of aggression would be to breed them and then you will see great displays of aggression! But everyone has their own experiences, good luck!

Guys, i got my jag in a 30 long now... it is kinda hiding behind a pot then coming out... but its color has not really improved that much. but it does have bright red eyes :)

i am not keeping it in a 65 for life... i will eventually get around a 90-120 once it hits a foot or so... then go from there!

how long have you had it for again? It may hide for awhile before it comes our and openly swims. You shouldn't really need dithers for an interactive fish like a jag, other than just having more to look at.

1.) 1"+ a month then growth curbs about 8-10" mark

2.) Both are aggressive/territorial with the males more so 95% of the time (My male will lose his mind if you touch the substrate & I don't think tank mates would survive long in anything under a 180gal)

3.) IMO they start fully start turning on around the 6" mark.

Diet wise: I would shoot for a high protein quality pellet. However mine never would fully accept pellets (likes squishing flesh I think). So I do chopped white fish fillets soaked in vitachem.

Give it time to settle in it will come around in a few weeks.
