He's probably around 6 inches now, she's just a little bit larger than him.The male looks mighty small tho. You can try a mirror to get the testosterone going.

I don't think it'll be much longer before they spawn. They definitely seem to be practicing for it night & day, all they do is eat, display to each other, and clean around their rock. I'm guessing they'll breed sometime in the next month, possibly less.
I'm very impressed with the bond this pair has, haven't had a pair of fish this much in love for a looong time. Getting fish to mate is easy, getting them to love each other is another thing entirely.
I've managed to get a male synspila and female texas back from the lfs I traded them to. They seem to be bonding, will take pics of the new pair when they've settled in. These two came from cichlids of the americas with the male texas X female synspila pair pictured in this thread, they are very likely siblings. So now I have two pairs, one is male carpintis X female synspila, one is male synspila X female carpintis. I do not know how strong the pair bond is between the new pair, we shall see.

I've been using a divider with these guys recently as they were really scrapping...tonight I look and see the "male" carpintis laying eggs on "his" side of the divider, I remember several times being confused as to why my "male" texas still had a dark spot in it's dorsal, and why my "female" syn was soooo stocky and colorful & had such awesome finnage. Much more so than even it's brother that fathered my current fry. I even tried pairing them with different fish a few times (in an effort to figure out who was who) because it seemed so odd. But I never proved anything to my liking...no wonder, lol!

Mind you when I ordered these fish I got multiples of each species, they were sold to me as sexed individuals, they came to me in bags marked male or female... I suppose things could have gotten mixed up after those bags were opened. I can see how it happened with the syn, I had several and they shared a tank, but I only had two texas, and I really remember that texas being marked as male. Eh, lets just chalk it up to a simple mix-up. They're still a pair, lol!
How would there be fry? There was a divider between them when she laid eggs, the eggs were never fertile...I thought I had mentioned that already...U got fry? or they eat rhe eggs

Many flowerhorn breeders use grated dividers with the sexes separated so as to not risk either fish. They place a suitable egg laying surface next to the divider on the females side and use low output powerheads on the males side to direct current to the females side. Males drop their load and the current carries it over the eggs the female lays.

The only reason I use dividers is when the male is being impatient with the female & harassing her, or simply to control unwanted breeding. I do not set my tanks up for actual divider breeding, no current is provided to carry the males "load" over to the eggs. This pair will not be allowed to spawn for at least another 2-3 weeks, possibly longer.
