Doesn't dark vs. light substrate effect the colors?

I've found that a overly dark substrate makes them display darker colors while light colors bleach them slightly. I say a nice colored sand or somewhat dark gravel makes them pop the best ime

Not really, mine is on white sand and he is the darkest Jag I have seen in person. That is the case for some fish but doesn't seem to be the case with Jags.

Weird... A lot of people on here say the substrate effects it... I also heard that dark color= stress is this true?

This is my favorite Jag of all times. Its not mine I took it from Youtube. I hope mine turns out like this. I watch the video of this jag 3 to 4 times a week.

I don't know I heard the same thing but then I heard they lighten as they get older. So I am just going to wait and see. Mine is black but there is no reason for him to be stressed he has great living conditions he eats like a king and water quality is pristine. One person on here said that mine just had wide bars. I don't know jsut learning as I go.

I love that jag and I hope my boy can get his size one day

I love the colors I am really hoping mine is a male so he has potential to look like that.

I've found young Jags stay dark a lot of the time. In tanks I've seen at lfs the darkest one I usually the most beat up or lowest on the totem pole

The reason I bought mine is his colors where different than the other. The fins and tail where the color they are now with white spots on the tail. The body was mostly silver. On the way home he darkened up like he is now. So maybe he does feel like the low man in the tank.

This is my original post (there are some nice pics of jags on there to)
