How do you afford so many tanks?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Work 40 hours a week, I run the kitchen of the bar I work at. I've worked there for 5 years, not many other 21 yr olds can say that lol. Also I work alone in said kitchen, I wait tables, cook, clean all of it. Pretty good tips.

Also garage sales, none of my tanks were bought at full price. Also smart equipment purchases are a must. Certain things you just don't need, like carbon, new sponges, etc.

I don't have huge... but! I don't like buying used tanks or heaters but the rest .. go for it! the 2262 I have I paid 325$ for it including media, its $500 new here without media...

Skimp on everything except education. A sheepskin will get you a better-paying career. Then you won't need to sacrifice so much to keep your hobby flourishing.

A military pension and 6-figure occupation help me greatly with my hobby.

First and foremost you need a good job, if you are paying all your bills on minimum wage at the local fast food place you won't be adding a large tank to the mix. I am a chemical engineer and my wife is a biomedical engineer, we do well, and are still young (<30 for a few more months!!!)

Ill chime in too here.. Since ur still at home, be patient school is a way to go but pick your major smarter, say go to 4 year college, get say psychology or sociology major, those are not sellable degree after 4 years, say nursing will get u decent job after 4 years.. You get my point.
Stay at home and save, thats what im doing now, I pay rent but fraction.
Get your basic classes at community colleges before going to 4 years, there are also 2 year degrees that will make.more than 4 year degrees. Just choose smart.

How I wish I was 19 again and could do some better choices.

I own 3 tanks totalling close to 400 gals

Good luck.

I agree with the above posters. Get an education that gives you a marketable job skill.

right now i go to a community college and will only be going for two years, after that i plan on being a police officer and in philadelphia, they make a little more than the national average.

If you're planning on being a police officer, have you considered a career in corrections? It's not as glamorous a job, but can pay well. In California, at least, correctional employees get paid very well. Correctional officers make 3774 - 6389; sergeants 5675 - 7168; lieutenants 6389 - 8072; correctional counselor IIs 6686 - 8868; correctional administrators 8848 - 10,146. Many people keep promoting upwards with some top administrators having started their careers as officers. RNs make 7285 - 9296. Great benefits, and retirement. http://jobs.spb.ca.gov/wvpos/corrdeptlisting.cfm?DEPT=corrections&sRow=201

California may be the exception, though. RNs in corrections in California make about the same as dentists in Washington who work for corrections.

^ my cousin is in corrections around here, he makes a good amount, enough to own a 5 bedroom house in the suburbs, supply for his family (wife and 3 kids) and drive some nice cars. Also its not as dangerous, believe it or not, as police work

Monthy. The figures are starting pay to maximum level for each category. Many work a lot of overtime (by their choice), and with overtime at time and a half, their income can be quite significant. The benefits and retirement are substantial for correctional employees. At 3% per year of service, with 30 years in, custody retire at 90% of their highest salary. The percentage may have changed in 2014 with new hires getting 2.5% per year of service. I think the pay is good for a college degree not being required, and with plenty of opportunities for advancement. It's certainly higher than minimum wage.

Because the OP stated that he was going to be a police officer, I just provided a viable career alternative.

With a professional degree, working in the California corrections system can make paying bills a lot easier. Check out the monthly salaries of CDCR physicians. Here are current openings: http://jobs.spb.ca.gov/wvpos/corrdeptlisting.cfm?DEPT=corrections&sRow=601

I got my 75 gallon fish tank when someone wanted to throw it away so they gave to me. I cleaned it up and it has been running for over 12 years.

Also when you build your own acrylic tank you can save big bucks. Such as a 475 gallon tank goes for $8000 dollars or more but it only has a $1100 dollars in a acrylic.
