How to Public Aquariums Filter Their Displays?

My very close friend builds and maintains the filtration setups for a few public aquariums in my area. I got to see the behind the scenes setups. It blew my mind. But they mostly use sand and bead filters.

this is what I hear from petsmart employees who actually know what they are looking at ,at their own stores

Sand bed filters have crazy Beneficial Bacteria capacity if only someone could invent a smaller size for the typical home consumer, I would be first to purchase
