I've wondered the same thing so I bought tickets to a behind the scenes tour of my local pubic aquarium.

the amount of time and effort put into to building and maintaining these is unbelievable, really inspired me to beef up my tanks filtration, just wondering how do sand filters actually work? i wish we could see inside those big filters

Just makes me realize how small our desert aquarium really is, we just got a new one built though, exited to go see it soon opens this month

Sand filters a readily available. Just look around.

+1 on the sand/bead filters - I saw the filter room at monterey bay aquarium and it's all the use practically

If you ever make it to Toronto visit their aquarium. As part of the tour you can see all the filters, and it has displays to show how much they are filtering. It's been a little bit since I've gone, but if I remember correctly their main tank (2.5 million litres) has 8 filters that process roughly 2500 litres per minute each. I might have some better pictures at home, I'll try and find them tonight
