Unfortunately my good LFS that is very knowledgeable on the hobby is 40 minutes away, which is not somewhere I want to drive to every week. So I am forced to settle for another LFS that is only 15 minutes away to get minor things like food and filter pads. Where as my good one is where I get my fish, tanks, filters, etc. So I went in to get some flake and browsed their fish like always when I noticed a Tiger Shovelnose about 4" in a custom 34 gallon tank with thicklip gouramis, four line pims, and tinfoil barbs. Just because I like to test their staff's knowledge I called back a girl and asked her what tank size (just to see if they were well informed since I know300 is absolute min with bigger being better). She said "Well I've never seen one bigger than 10 inches" So I'd say a 55 Gallon. I busted out laughing and the girl just walked away being angry that a customer knows more than her. So I also noticed an Achara in a separate 34 custom with 5 angelfish and a common pleco. I asked another woman that was back there the tank size. She said "I'm not sure how big they get" so I said 28-30" and she responded by saying "Oh 30 inches, well then I'd say a 55 is plenty". Again I laughed but hid it better this time. Then I lectured about how it would not be able to turn, even going all the way up and she said "Well it doesn't have to turn". At this point I was pi$t and ready to go to the manager but I just walked out. I feel terrible for the fish and was ready to buy when I reminded myself of the conversations on here that buying a fish you can't house permanently is worse than leaving it in a bad LFS's care so I didn't buy anything.
If anybody is in the Hampton area (Suburb of Pittsburgh) and can house one of these fish I would encourage someone on here buying at least one of them otherwise they'll probably go to some amateur's 55 gallon tank. The name of the store is "Seahorse, a Pet Paradise".
Hope somebody responsible buys these fish, either on here or somebody local that actually knows stuff about fish.
