Unfortunately my good LFS that is very knowledgeable on the hobby is 40 minutes away, which is not somewhere I want to drive to every week. So I am forced to settle for another LFS that is only 15 minutes away to get minor things like food and filter pads. Where as my good one is where I get my fish, tanks, filters, etc. So I went in to get some flake and browsed their fish like always when I noticed a Tiger Shovelnose about 4" in a custom 34 gallon tank with thicklip gouramis, four line pims, and tinfoil barbs. Just because I like to test their staff's knowledge I called back a girl and asked her what tank size (just to see if they were well informed since I know300 is absolute min with bigger being better). She said "Well I've never seen one bigger than 10 inches" So I'd say a 55 Gallon. I busted out laughing and the girl just walked away being angry that a customer knows more than her. So I also noticed an Achara in a separate 34 custom with 5 angelfish and a common pleco. I asked another woman that was back there the tank size. She said "I'm not sure how big they get" so I said 28-30" and she responded by saying "Oh 30 inches, well then I'd say a 55 is plenty". Again I laughed but hid it better this time. Then I lectured about how it would not be able to turn, even going all the way up and she said "Well it doesn't have to turn". At this point I was pi$t and ready to go to the manager but I just walked out. I feel terrible for the fish and was ready to buy when I reminded myself of the conversations on here that buying a fish you can't house permanently is worse than leaving it in a bad LFS's care so I didn't buy anything.

If anybody is in the Hampton area (Suburb of Pittsburgh) and can house one of these fish I would encourage someone on here buying at least one of them otherwise they'll probably go to some amateur's 55 gallon tank. The name of the store is "Seahorse, a Pet Paradise".

Hope somebody responsible buys these fish, either on here or somebody local that actually knows stuff about fish.

The issue is if someone buys it they will likely order more assuming the fish is in demand. I hate seeing betta fish in 4 oz of water, but j know if I were to buy them all, next week they would have twice as many

Me too, funny you say that. My science teacher just got a Betta today and it's in less than a half gallon tank that isn't cycled. So I typed up an entire care sheet at school and am giving it to her tomorrow.

It.. sucks... But if someone buys that poor thing, theyr just gonna order another one in. The answer is to educate the staff better. Fish like RTC, TSN Or Achara, lets just say fish that normaly grows over 2ft, should not be sold in lfs's without the lfs having a license. The lfs should only get this license, if a couple of "test people" went in, and all got the same good answer, of the minimum tank size.

My solution to the problem is more passive, if a place is being dumb in one way or another I spend my money elsewhere and wait for them to go out of business.

GOOD IDEA ...maybe offer to help with it's care too

That sounds good. I wanna hear about her reaction when you give her the care sheet :)

problem is to many people shop there.

She is pretty nice so hopefully she will accept help and realize that a fish's life is just as valuable as a cat or dog's. Not to get into the Walmart thread again (starting to regret I made it).
