yes.. they should be mellow enough:) one thing about firemouths though ...they have been tank bred so long that lots have become low quality ...get your pair from a good dealer or choose wisely
 
There are just so many that would qualify. Depends on tank size and your interests. Here are some examples, many of which have been listed by others. I really like the look of female festae as well, but haven't kept any to date.

I like this contrast of a syn and loisellie together. I also love a. Robertsonis because their blue seems like it glows in the dark. I also like h. Deppi. And a. Rostratus together.

They are in the same family as typical Firemouths, this guy in the photos is probably around 5" I think their max is no more than 7" Thoricthys Ellioti or Thor. Maculipinnis (if I spelled that right)

I have this guy in a 55g corner tank with a female, some red eye tetras, cherry barbs, and a pair of BN's (oh and a single swordtail). Female is currently tending eggs, in a 'cichlid stone' and I have 13 fry growing out from a batch of fry in early January.
