Can someone tell me what I have here?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Changed video to public.

That looks like the closest I have seen yet. Just googled it. I am going to have to do some research. Do you have any info on them? Mine also has the red stripe down the dorsal. Thanks. I am not 100% sure that is it yet but boy looks very very close. has the white under belly as well.

Im no expert on them but i believe they are quite rare to come by in the hobby. They can be fairly aggressive but not quite like other centrals i.e. trimac, midas etc. They tend to get around the 12inch mark for males and 8/9inch for females. They colour up nicely as they get bigger. Going by the colour and shape i would say yours is very young and prob around the 3 inch mark.

I would say for now he is probably trying to create territory in the tank. Try breaking up the line of sight as this may help with aggression. He should be okay in that size tank for a while but if you do keep all the fish you mention you will need to upgrade eventually!

Your best bet is to research these guys on the net as much as you can.

If you do have a lyonsi, you have a much rarer fish than you green terror and severum that is for sure, so worth considering should you have to chose between them.

It is from petsmart. The guy at the store said he thought it might red texas be as well.

Try to get some pics of it in hover mode or in a specimen container to get a real good pic of any pearls it may or may not have or colors it may have

I was doing allot of reading last night and I am 100% this is Lyonsi. Which is odd with how rare they are and I got him from petsmart from all places. Nobody at petsmart even knew what he was. All colors and shapes I have seen on him reflect Lyonsi. With the rarity of this fish I will most certainly be keeping him if I have to make the decision between him and the other fish. If he was a Flowerhorn then it would be a toss up but after reading about Lyonsi he will win out no question over the other fish. I really wish I knew this little guys journey. How does petsmart wind up with such a rare fish.

From what I read if I get a bigger tank as he grows there is a chance of him cohabiting with my other fish. The 75 is big enough for just him. I will be growing this guy out into a nice sized fish keeping him as a lone "wet pet" if need be.

I don't believe he is an unfaded red devil as others have suggested because his colors are off (he is a metalic golden yellow). The body shape is completely different.

No pearls. I would rather not stress him out anymore by netting. Did you see the video maybe that will give a clearer picture?

I believe petsmart gets their stock from seagrest farms. On their site they have lyonsi also so maybe you got that. If it's lacking pearls I'd guess red devil/midi or kamfa. Check petsmart rt thread for kamfa pics. I'm no pro though but who knows, mystery fish are fun.

Mystery fish are fun. I checked out seagrest and they do have Lyonsi and the pics look very similar to mine. I am pretty confident in what I have now.

i'v been working in retail selling thousands of fish every month for 3 years now. since i cant see it in person i'd still say it's a red devil because of the spots and the way the black bars are. im like 98% sure and no chance it's a red texas they have blue pearls and should resemble a carpintis. also chances are is a red devil because they are veryyyyy common and get sold to large corporate businesses listed with many different names.
