Assuming a tank holds water, how do you decide if it is still worth re sealing?
I have a 150g I just got off craigslist (traded my 55g for it!!) and according to the person I bought it from it had water in it just a week ago, and does not leak. But as all craigslist frequenters know, just because he said so, doesn't make it so. I will be testing it before I do anything and of course if it leaks I will have to reseal it, but if not, should I still? One corner of the plastic frame is broken, and on one spot inside the tank the silicone looks like it is peeling up a bit.

Is there any good in just putting a little new silicone over the old stuff in the sort of peely spot, or would that just make it worse?

IMO I would reseal it. You already saw some deterioration so with a tank that big is it worth the risk? Some of the silicone has failed it won't be long before the rest does.

How much of the old silicone should I remove? One DIY video I watched said scrape it all out, but someone else told me that puts the glue holding the glass together at risk of pulling apart, so you shouldn't.

Is it a 150 extra tall I have resealed 2 of thos already this year I pick them up for around 100 for full setup. With the tall ones the I have had to pull the bottoms off its a common problem with them. It's not to hard to do just takes time.

In regards to how much to scrap off I only scraped what I knew was bad. And just look at the at the sides where the glass meets each other I took the bottom frame off and this is what I found

I'm sorry, I don't understand what I'm looking at in this picture. Are you saying you took off the plastic frame? How did you put it back on on?

I guess it's a tall? It is 48"x24"x31"

What do you mean by "pull the bottoms off"? LIke the bottom pane of glass? I don't know if I'm prepared for that!

Yea what you are looking at in the pictures is the bottom plate of glass with the plastic already off. You can see the silicone has separated in the one picture that's what the white strip is. The other picture is the other side that looked like it was going to go soon. I did take the plastic off and all you need to do to put it back on is silicone it back on. I just filled one of them up the other day it's still holding water I'm working on one now I'll try to take step by step pictures if you are wanting to do it.

Remove all the old silicone and reseal the entire thing. New silicone do not adhere to old silicone well. Just do it right the first time, this will most likely save you some major headaches later on.
