The mom was like 10 feet away and reacted immediately. Scary you have a kid and don't understand what the word alone means...

Hello; One observation that seems relevant. The kid was riding around and at that time had no interaction with the dog. Kid was not pulling the dogs ears, throwing things at it, nor poking the dog with a stick.

Perhaps we can make some guesses about how the dogs owner will answer if the question of it's behavior is ever put to him/her. While I tend to agree with an earlier post that the dog should be put down for what happened, my guess is that some will come to the dogs defense. At least that has been the pattern in past dog bite kid threads.

Around 4.5 million people are bit by dogs each year. This is way more than any wild animals, bears, sharks, etc. Yes, majority of dogs are good loyal companions (i have one myself) but the large number of dogs in close proximity to humans (in the neighborhood / home) lead to a high number of attacks. Dog owners need to be responsible for their pet. After the dog is put down I hope they go after the owner...if they can find the owner.

owners are responsible for 100% of dog misbehavior , at least after first incident of bad behavior, if a dog bites the kid next door, it's the owners fault.. unless the kid is in the wrong yard AND acting inapropriatly towards the dog

Hello; Don't count on the dog being put down. A thread some weeks back was about a dog that had killed a child. The owners turned the dog over to authorities to be put down. A dog advocate group took the local authorities to court and got the dog off. Now that this has become a big enough story to make the late night news, all bets are off.

Hello; I suppose that you are speaking in the legal sense of responsibility. The dog in the video was acting on it's own and seemed very deliberate in it's actions. In my book that makes the dog responsible. The owner did not keep the dog confined, but the dog did the act and is indeed responsible.

I think you may be the first to come to the dog's defense in this thread.
