Why no large UNFADED bp?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Here are 2 bp/tex hybrids. The bigger one has the sheen you speak of and the smaller one just has some color. I believe the bigger will eventually fade... eventually. Not sure about the smaller one tho. But neither are worthy of a being bred for a rt project so they are good dithers. Lol

The one thing i have come to accept but do not understand is for many of the slower to fade fish it is tied in with being stressed in some way. I have had some fade when another fish was added to the tank or have moved them into another tank. I have had others start to fade after a long term power outage where the fish had to endure lower temps and no filtration for about 24 hrs. Even watching a group of fry growing out it seemed that the ones most picked on faded first along with the dominate male while the rest took their time.

You know I used to think dominance played a major role and I'm sure it does to a point... but in the past I had a small texas pair that I bred and they had some rt juvies with them. Long story short... the rt were dithers and no where near dominant but 1 of the 3 faded real fast. So I guess it's more of a gene thing.

I have some rt's(about 8) now that are a year and a half old and still have not faded. I don't really care about them much because I'm sure my red mammon/carpintis crosses will be more worth my time.

I wouldn't waste any more seconds on that.

been seeing the same things over and over for the past 8 years. the red fish's gene mostly is to wash off patterns and turn offsprings into faders.

U want both parents with pearls and visual faders. Dont breed back to green carpinti for pearls or breed back to parrot for red tat's wasting your time for one sided outcome. U need both pearls and red.

That's all understood but I have yet to find a first gen that is fertile(well one I wanted to continue my project with)... So I don't waste time letting bro and sis pair for fertility testing anymore. But other than that I really don't care to make a "Red Texas." Yea they are nice but I like the hybrids that come from the initial cross. I choose what catches my eye and I go from their... if a red tex pops out it will be a bonus that I will try and breed but I'm done stressing over certain looks. Yea I keep the thought of which first generation fish will give me more red and/or pearls... but I'm really just in it now to make unique good looking fish.

Thanks for all the input guys... it helped out alot.

Question im culling next week and im wondering about folded or bent pectorial fins being able to straighten out cause I have one that is segregated had one fin that was a little folded but it straightened out but most of the short bodies with really bada$$ pearls have extremely deformed pec fins and I really dont think they'll straighten out has anyone had experience with this deformity

You probably would be better off starting a thread on this subject. I can say none of the short body fish I have raised have had any of the issues your talking about.

I would say the problem is 1 of 3 things... first and most obvious maybe because it's a genetic defect. Second maybe water quality. But 3rd I have to ask were the parents good parents... did they leave the eggs with the fungus alone instead of cleaning them up?

I've heard about these type fish getting dumped into pet stores but I have never personally witnessed it.

The eggs never got fungus on them they hatched to soon for it to grow in 2.5 days its mostly a genetic defect only maybe one in twenty have it and as for the water quality I change the water 50% percent one week and 60% the next week keep alternating I was thinking about starting a thread on it but about everyone ive gone through seems to have either not many responses or a pissing contest on being man enough to cull fry

I had the same experience. My only fader was the one who was getting chased around in my 125 by all his siblings. When he started fading I didn't realize it because I thought he was just stressed really bad.

That's funny because most faders do have the impression they are getting picked on... I still have to double check lol. Well I guess they have genetic timers and fade when their genes allow them to...
