Hoplarchus psittacus / Parrot Cichlids:

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I keep mine in with Geophagus Altifrons. Hopefully get a pair or 2(Psittacus) in a couple years and then ill put them in their own tanks and then im allowed to buy more fish. cant wait for them to start coloring up. people tell me my fish are plain. they dont understand potential :(

I have a question. I've noticed there are some psittacus with orange/reddish throat while there are others that do not. is this due to a different collection points or maybe Unpaired coloring?

I would like to know this also. I am hoping to acquire a proven wc pair soon
Also will ro be required for a wc pair? I live in a hard high ph area.

Mine show the slightest hint of rust in the throat area but no where near like some I've seen. I did some checking on line and came across an article by Wayne Liebel that may provide a clue as to which do and which don't have the red flush. Here is a quote from his article:
"The Parrot Cichlid inhabits flooded brush and forest regions (varzea) usually in black water (e.g., Rio Negro) or adjoining habitats. My specimens are from Colombia and are bright iridescent green. The most colorful individuals that I've ever seen (with bright scarlet breasts and throats) hailed from Brazil. Regrettably, I couldn't afford them at the time (graduate school), but as is often the case with wild fish, the red didn't hold in captivity. My fish show only a hint of the breast-throat flush. I have also seen Parrot Cichlids of unknown provenance that were simply khaki-drab brown, particularly as large, older specimens."

Tongs in Huntington beach, ca. Has a wild caught one right now. He is big and chases around the little dither all day, from the looks of it. Definitely worth a pick up if you have the space for him, probably around the 13''-15'' range right now. From my estimate

i'm going to revive this thread a bit, some of you have mentioned yours became to aggressive and had to be rehomed as they got older, is that common with H. Psittacus? has anyone had calm ones? and is that when they are kept solo only?
