Alternative sources of filter material than pet stores?

x8 scrubbies for a $1, minimum x12 pkgs of x8 (x96 scrubbies)

Order online to ship to your local store, and you pick up... I'm searching now for a scrubbie per cu/ft calculation to see if I need x2 or x3 (96 or 192 or 288) for a few projects I have.

If you know any retailers or business owners you can get them a lot cheaper from wholesalers like Cotton Valley etc.
I can get them bulk and cheap but it's just not worth it for me to resell ship.

I want filter floss, a filter sponge (12x2-3x4), felt, and nylon scrubbers (5 gallons), but since pet-labeled products are often so much more expensive than others, I am looking for other sources to buy these materials, preferably in bulk, but that will not leach chemicals into my system. So, where do you guys get yours from?

I used to buy all my filter pad from Ebay, but someone recently posted a thread that showed a better place. I can't remember the place though.

For scrubbies, I used to buy them in bulk out of Cali. You had to have a business license to buy from them though. But you can get 1,000 for about $.08-.10 each, assuming no markup and no shipping.

.

should be easy enough to figure out. since you no longer buy your stuff from ebay, you must have found a better place. where do you buy your filter pad from now?

I don't buy filter pad. I moved every thing to an air driven system and/or canister filters. This eliminated the need to use filter floss. Before that, I switched to using filter sock as they were easier and worked a lot better.

Doit Best online store is still great. And I practice what I preach.

$24 + tax worth

83 scrubbies used in ~15gallon sump- filters a 40G breeder with plants and parts and pieces from an overflow I had-x4 scrubbies as prefilter-critter catcher in overflow box.

No baffles, just egg crate to set filter material on- polyfill (filter floss from Wallmart) a 350GPH pump, and a jam jar for my inflow in sump. At time of build cost- ~$60- and that was 95% the pump costs.

Apparently nylon scrubbers are not easy to find for a reasonable price. I went to 4 dollar stores and ended up with 5 packs of 6 over the course of 2 weeks. They said I could order a case online (dollar tree) but they are no longer offered online, the others said to check back later and maybe they would have more (so far no restocking). Might have to make the drive to the nearest DoIt Best and spend $15 in gas for a $24 purchase. It amazes me that these things go for upwards of $1/piece everywhere online.

Racersk, how many scrubbers per cubic foot are the ones from DoIt Best?

I bought my scrubs at dollar stores 6 for a buck.

I use polyester floss. Its cheap at the lfs, so I haven't bought the stuff from Walmart for pillow stuffing

One store in my area has the marineland cut to fit blue bonded pad for $3 a roll. It looks identical to the hvac air filters we cut to fit at work. I may switch to those.

I like the blue pads. They are coarse for big debris. I can rinse them multiple times and they dont become matted down like rolls of white poly sheeting from walmart or a quilt store.

I use poly fill for polishing. You can get a years worth for like 5 bucks and I'm filling a few fx5s and three other canisters. For the other coarser pads I buy in bulk and cut my own. Much cheaper. I've heard of people using scotch bright pads as well.

For a nice round number, I'd say 50 scrubbies per cu foot-packed in
