Will Dow 795 work to reseal a glass tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It sounds as if it is expired. Assuming it has been curing at room temp it should have long since skinned over and been well on its way to fully dry by now. Between it still being wet and the missing expiration I'm guessing the seller pulled a fast one on you

No he didn't pull a fast one on me because as soon as I seen the date missing off the tube I contacted him about it and he gave me my money back for them!! but yes I think that was his plan and I believe he know it was expired and that's why he gave my money back so fast and just told me to throw the 795 away... 99% of the time you have to send the item back to get a refund!!

However I did buy some of the RTV 103 and used it to reseal 1 of these tank and was very impressed with it... I could say lots of good things about it and only one bad thing!!! I have never seen any kind of silicone that sticks to glass as good as this stuff does, it is actually hard to even scrap a thin layer of it off with a razor blade, and the stuff is SUPER, SUPER strong!!! That little paper thin layer I scraped off with the razor blade I tried to pull it and break it I bet it stretched 8 or 10 inch's before it broke, and it was so thin you could literally see right through it!!!

But now the bad side to it is that stuff dry's way way way too fast... I think it would work great for smaller tanks but on this 4 foot tank the stuff was skinning over before I even got it all on... And I like to do the tape line to make it look better so that was real tough to smooth it out good then get the tape off before it skinned too much!!! If it was not for the drying so fast I would give it a 10+ out of 10, but that is a real big problem for me!!

But thank you very much for the suggestion of it, I will use it again for sure on smaller tanks!!!

Yes, it does skin over very quickly, but the strength of it is great, there is a reason the big manufacturers use it lol. But they dont use tape for their seams, so they dont need to worry about pulling the tape.

This is part of the reason it worries me seeing people building huge tanks for their first builds. If they are using the proper silicone it skins over very quick. Once it skins that glass better be in place or you need to start over. It happens too quickly for most new builders to get right the first time. It is important to practice small and work your way up! And not directed at you Jamey, just a comment in general about tank building. I think many, many people underestimate its difficultly.
