So in every Jack Dempsey, there is always golng to be Jack Dempsey that will just be blue(these are the pure EBJD). And when you cross it with another blue gene cichlid, the babies are going to come out the color of the fish we get at petsmart or other big chain stores called the Electric Blue Jack Dempsey. Is that correct??
 
I must admit I like getting silver dollars for $2, and buenos aires tetras for 80 cents. Hard to beat their sales.

Sorry, don't want to derail this thread or get too much into it, but not exactly. A "blue gene JD" will look no different than a normal or wild-type JD. The gene for electric blue is a recessive gene. In this case it will not be physically demonstrated in the offspring. There are many variations in coloring and spangling of jd's just as with many other tropical fish, and for the most part "ebjd's" found at large chain stores such as petsmart/Petco are simply mislabeled regular jd's that happen to have more pronounced blue spangling.

The 3 petsmarts by me don't have anything other than common stuff. Neons, Danios, Platties, Mollies, Guppies that sort. Majority of stock is of goldfish and koi. As far as cichlids go mixed mbunas, mixed peacocks, an always empty tank labeled for an electric blue hap (find that so funny), lots of Oscars 2 different sizes, Flower horn and red texas in the same tank that nobody can tell apart, convicts, and just started carrying firemouths.

I do have to admit the stores by me that went through a remodel have healthier looking fish most of the time. I was excited about the clown loach sale but didnt by any cause they all looked near dead and oscars all have IP's but it is a step up from where they were.

I would love it if mine got the electric blue acara and JD. Only 1 LFS in my area has them so they have jacked the prices way up.
 
I also have to ask does the OP work for Petsmart just by thread count and the way the title is worded.
 
Just for the record, when discussing EBJD the term mutation that Pops used was correct.

And thus far, nothing definitive has been proved one way or the other with regards to the EBJD. Cole even states just that at the end of the article that was linked to.

Since this test was completed, we have come to find that more information is needed to get a real solid and complete answer to the question, "Is Electric Blue Jack Dempsey a hybrid, or a color morph?".

The tests that still need to be completed are karyotype analysis, and full genome mapping of EBJDs, JDs and of each species suspected to be part of the hybrid genes. These tests are not cheap, and are not quick. Its possible these tests may never be run.

Despite the temporary dead end, we still have valuable discussion to be had on this topic.

So the question still remains, do you think Electric Blue Jack Dempsey's are a hybrid fish, or a color morph of Rocio octofasciata? You be the judge.

IMO they are genetically weak fish, much along the lines of an overly inbred flowerhorn, whether they are hybrid or not I personally don't care. Just getting the facts straight ......

Oh definitely. Don't get me wrong, petsmart is good for community type fish (I got a bunch of colombian tetras for a buck each a while back) because of their common sales. It's just so rare to find anything good there. The fish in my avatar was a hybrid I found at one in the red texas tank.

Just more times than not, they have oscars, convicts, and blood parrots as the only fish other than community/lots of goldfish.
 
Around me Petsmart is way better than Petco. Their fish are actually pretty healthy. And yeah if you are buying dithers you can get amazing deals during their sales. Also their Corey sale are great! I bought 35 cories for $0.75 each! Sometimes they get some cool stuff in too.
 
I decided to go to petsmart during lunch (thanks to this thread) They had blood parrots there for $9. There is one I am considering because it mouth is more normal and not as deformed head. All have of the BP's are the same color though they have the grey body with red throat like a grey flower horn it also had red fins like a red texas. I know all BP start out grey or black and fade to orange but are these something different. Anyone see BP bred to be the grey and red coloring.

Also the one not as deformed as a normal BP was the most aggressive in the tank.
