I'm not sure if this is posted to the right place but here goes. I'm about to take the plunge and build my own acrylic tank. I've done about half the research I'll need to and have begun to get quotes for the acrylic. My goal is to do a large south american community focusing on Peacock Bass. I plan on having an arrowana, giraffe cat, montoro ray or two, large geos, etc. I would love to try a dorado but not sure yet. That said the acrylic prices are similar if I do a 10'x3'x34" or a wider but shorter 8'x4'x34" high. I'm limited to the 34" if I ever have to get it out of my house. What do you think?

The taller you go the more expensive the build will be. I be been pricing out new tanks and talking to builders. A 30" tall tank you can use 3/4 acrylic. Anything taller, from what I was told you will have to go up to 1" +. I got quotes and for 36" tall they were all using 1.25 and 1.5"

The 10 footer

Thanks Johnny. That's the same info I've been given. The quotes I got were for 1". If I did the 34" tall it would allow 32" inside dimensions with probably 29"-30" of water so I figure I'd be ok. I'd even look at the 3/4" but they had the 1" in 10' sheets.

8x4x34 is what I would prefer. Sounds like a awesome tank in the making.

There are a number of fish that are called giraffe catfish and some could live a lifetime in either tank. From my readings, as long as you don't mean the largest giraffe catfishes (e.g., Auchenoglanis Occidentalis) then the 10 foot should be fine.
