Plecos in acrylic tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wouldn't think so. They are carnivorous pleco's and I know pleco's like Pseuda's aren't a worry in acrylic tanks since there carni's. I know wood eaters and big herbivores like P. gibbiceps can damage acrylic.

Glad I read this. I just got a brand new acrylic tank, and I was thinking I'd put 3 or 4 Royals in it. That would have been a bad lick to spend $400 on Pleco's and then have to bring em down to the LFS a couple weeks later and trade em in for $50. How about Adonis Pleco's? They rasp on acrylic tanks?

That's one of the things everybody has heard but never seen.. All but "that one guy" who is pretty credible but still can't prove it..

I'm sure enough to call bs but i will still curse my own stupidity (since i knew) if i came home to 500g on the floor because my plecos ate the seal..

Hate those kinds of myths..

I have actually experienced this myself over the summer with Leporacanthicus Triactis- L91. I have a 6-7 incher and he rasped away at the silicone seals in a 90 gallon. I could hear it at night and woke to find silicone shavings floating in the tank. Tried rearranging things but it happened again so i had to move him. No- i dont have any pics so believe it or not....

I should also say that this particular L91 has a really bad attitude and routinely picked fights with an 11 inch L25 he was housed with. This L91 also rasps wood like crazy leaving shavings all over just like a panaque would. I moved him into a tank with a deeper sand bed and have had no further issues... Yet. He is also the only pleco in this new tank and probably gets more food as a result- which may be a factor

Interesting. Well maybe put him back in the old tank then you could take pics and vid for us to see lol. Was the damage it did real bad on the silicone?

I have a 240 gal where most of my plecos are; L282, L160, L25, L24, L14, L142, L128, L114, L427, L82, L273, L48, LDA07, Luteus....all range from 5-14" I have no problems at all with acrylic getting scratched by them....knock on wood...or should I say gnaw on wood. Most of the time they are not even on the acrylic.

I also have a 75gal glass with assorted plecos including 5" goldline royal, two 5" xingu royal, and 7-8" BEC, and they are never on the glass and my silicone is untouched.

IMO, if you have lots of wood and feed them VERY WELL, You shouldn't have this problem. Both of my tanks are loaded with driftwood and I feed them extremely well! :)

Yea I rarely see mine on the side walls of my tank either but the tank is loaded with driftwood here also. I had driftwood I bought for 5 different tanks. Now there all in one. Driftwood jungle and they love it.

I love the idea, but the issue is my cichlids (most viejas) steal the wafers before they hit the ground....plus they eat every single pellet thrown in, no leftovers.

You try feed the Viejas on one side of the tank and when there into the little feeding frenzy put food in the opposite end for the pleco's.

Yes! It works! Thank you so much! I added some more malaysian driftwood that I've kept in my smaller planted tanks this morning, not a single plecos on the glass since! Thank you so much everyone!
