What is your preferred stand height?

I have a stand at 42 which is nice but a little shorter would have been good but I love the space to work on my sump and what. Another stand at 48 which is for standing. One at 30 for sitting or standing over to work with the fish in it.

Thanks for your opinion and reasons. I like it that you sit with a tape measure :) I sometimes do the same. We have very similiar stands already at 48" & 30". You mentioned you have another stand at 42" and would prefer it to be a bit shorter, if you could have it at any height, what would you make it at?

Both my tanks/stands I've built, I made the stand ~48" tall. Both tanks are around 20" tall, which puts the tank at eye height for most people. I have a couch about 8 feet from my tank, and I think it looks fine from the couch, but I agree shorter could make it look better while sitting down. I much prefer being able to stand up and view the tank without leaning over.

Maintenance is kind of a pain because I have to get out a step stool, whereas if the stand was more like 30" tall I wouldn't.

ALSO, one of the main reasons I made my recent tank 48" tall at the bottom is that it makes the bottom of my tank taller than my kitchen sink. The tank is about 12 feet away from my sink, and with a 1/2" hose I do water changes by siphoning the tank directly into the sink. Makes it SO much easier than having a bucket brigade.
 
I mostly say it just because I have rays and then when you add the sand it's just right at eye level. If I had normal fish it might be perfect. I honestly would have liked to see 40 inches just to get a touch more of the look down vs strait on with rays, 40 inches I think is close to perfection but that's for me sitting in an office chair, and with only a 24 tall tank. if I was sitting on a couch I would probably want it a little lower. If I had a taller tank the stand could be lower to still fit the stand sit viewable perfection I was looking for.

Current stand is 28", too short for a decent sump...might shoot for 30-32" depends how much room I'd need for sump and stand design...you guys have an open floor design for the stand and the sump sits directly on the floor or do you have it raised up a bit and build a floor for the sump into the stand?
