As for the firemouths... Ime they usually get their asses whooped because I've only ever seen them in communities. I, too, was considering buy a long male for my 45 gallon so aside from the silliness I'm happy I looked at this thread

Guys, guys; let's not forget, for that neon tetra in the 400g, there is quite obviously the need for 100% water changes every day otherwise the fish will instantly die

With sand its best to keep it moving around and not settle as it compacts and cause ammonia pockets.... Usually FMs tend to stir it up anyway but not all of it.
 
I've never had one issue with sand. I've never stirred it and never have any issues. Sand is much easier and way better looking than gravel.

On a side note, it's one pond snail for 400 gallons not a neon tetra.
