RC 540 Gallon CA Community Build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very nice setup! Were you happy with midwest customs as well? I also was going to do something very similar to jc1119's tankas well but more towards the size you ordered...looking at either 96x48x30 or 120x48x30. Was going to order mine through midwest as well so just curious how you liked working with them. Hoping to order mine next year...that is if my wife stops giving me projects to do in the house we just bought and I can actually start on my basement fish room/man cave!

VERY happy with Chris at Midwest. He walked me through tbe whole deal, was very patient, and he kinda almost insisted on some key design things I'm very glad I have now.

He definitely built this tank right. It's only now that I have it and see other acrylic tanks that I realize how well it's done-- the overflows, tbe joints look right in tbe corners, tbe sump is done well.

A 10 foot is almost TWICE as much as an 8 foot, but Chris can explain all that better than me.

Glad you were happy with their work...the price was the main reason I might not go with 10 feet long but I'm still debating....would be very happy with 8x4x2.5 as well though! Can't wait to get this started!

If you don't mind me asking what did just the tank run? That's about my dream size and I've looked at 300's but I would rather spend more and have a true monster tank.

$3880. It was about the same price from another company out of Florida. But, that's kinda meaningless now, because as I understand it, the input costs are volatile. So, it could be a good bit less or more 3 months from now, 6 months from now.

I just finished the Auto Water Changer. I got the 3 stage chlorine filter package with the chloramine filter block, a 40 Gallon per day regulator, and I bought a spare 60 Gallon per day regulator in case I decide to drip more later...and the chlorine/chloramine test kit. Now to see how long the filters last.

I'm interested in the auto water changer. Where did you get the regulators and how do they work. Sorry if I missed it.

I second the idea of upgrading to the 32" socks. I use them and although they sit a bit horizontal in the sump, they double the time it takes for the 16" socks to clog. I just blast mine with a garden hose on the jet setting...it's amazing how much crap a 32" sock will hold.

My apologies if my comment prompted you to go with more nozzles than you would have otherwise used. You are correct that I'm only using one pump on my setup...it's the Laguna Max-Flo 4200 (it's an older version from 2011). I think I have about 9' of head in my system, so I'm getting around 2,000GPH, which is pretty low turnover by most everyone's standards. That's why I didn't want to restrict flow any further using loc-line on my setup. I also used 2" plumbing (I know that's overkill, but I originally had a Reeflo Hammerhead pushing around 5,000GPH).

Are you using check valves? I opted to not use them since they can restrict flow and my sump has plenty of capacity when my pumps are off. I don't like the idea of relying on the check valve to work to prevent a flood...I just don't trust them. A concern with locline would be if a big fish knocks the nozzle(s) down into the water column and you have a power outage it could overwhelm your sump. Since you have multiple nozzles, that shouldn't be an issue. Anyways, just throwing out different thoughts....sorry for the rambling.

Your whole setup looks pro...nice work!

Where do you guys find the 32" socks? Thanks.
