RC 540 Gallon CA Community Build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
http://www.thefilterguys.biz/ I called them up, told them what I wanted to do, they sent me everything I needed. Very simple. They set me up with a 3 stage filter, and a 40 GPD "regulator". The regulator is a small plastic tube that connects inline to the output line out of the filter assembly. Not much to it, really. I guess it maintains a certain pressure, and knowing the ID of the tubing, that pressure means that water has to flow out of the tube at a certain rate.

I'm interested in the auto water changer. Where did you get the regulators and how do they work. Sorry if I missed it.

Mcmaster Carr is where lots of people here get 'em. There's another site people here like to use, too. I just ordered from McMaster Carr. I got 16 of them, I re-use the same 12 over and over, for months now. I've been washing them in the washing machine with no detergent, just cold water, and they come out pretty clean. This last time I rinsed them out in the driveway with a hose nozzle--they didn't come out much cleaner, it took an hour, and I think I used more water than the washing machine does. Here's a link to mcmaster carr..

Where do you guys find the 32" socks? Thanks.

The two spots I've bought filter socks are:

www.mcmaster.com
www.dudadiesel.com

McMaster carries the 8x32 size, whereas it looks like the largest Duda carries is 7x32. In my experience, the extra inch diameter of the 8x32 really helps.

I've bought both the polyester and the polypropylene and if I remember correctly the polypropylene is the tougher/longer lasting sock. For our purposes, I would definitely not bother with mesh filter bags.

I blast my socks over my lawn...fish poo makes great fertilizer and I figure I have to water my lawn anyways, so I'm killing two birds with one stone.

In case anyone is interested, you can find a lot of good info on filter socks on this thread: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?406140-A-Filter-Sock-Thread

Quick update photos....

The Jag had to go....he cleared a third of the tank, spent all day every day just chasing fish. It was stressing ME out just watching it.

I just got a red barred midas, and 2 Blackbelts wild caught from Rapps.

I have a male Synspilum I picked up from the LFS, he's not doing too well. he's kinda sick.

I have 5 Argentea, planning to thin those out, as soon as I see some sign of a pair forming, or when they just get too violent--whichever happens first. One is a little bigger than the others, a little more irridescent, so it's gonna be him and one other.

I have a male Trimac about 4 inches, smallest fish in the tank, but he doesn't seem to mind. He and the new Midas are not getting along at all. The Midas is the nicest fish in the tank...well, until he's not. But USUALLY, he's totally cool.

The water's still a little cloudy--I think it's from the PFS. I might try to vacuum all the sand in the tank and see if that helps. If not, I'll just wait--that's always helped before.

Nitrates stay very low with the 40 Gal/Day drip. Pretty low maintenance.

Great setup! I wouldn't get anything done, just sit and watch the tank all day.

Can your sump come out through the side if you needed it to? I'm looking to do a 100 gal sump under the steel stand. Chris was saying it would have to go in from the top before the tank was on it.

Yea, that's how mine is--gotta drain the tank and move it off the stand to get the sump out. So, I thought about that for a couple weeks, and decided to have Chris add a nice new custom acrylic sump to the order. I just KNEW a glass sump under that tank would spring a leak as soon as I got the tank full of huge fish and substrate.

I had a cabinet maker guru look at it, quoted me a price to do a custom stand/cabinetry with a span long enough to let me slide a sump tank in and out, and that was way more expensive than a custom acrylic sump. So, unless you're really good at carpentry, I figure just get the most solid sump you can, and leave it in there.

stand is 30 inches tall. tank is 30 inches tall. The biggest that would fit through the door.

Looks great, David!

Are you planning to add so tall plants in there? I think some tall greenery and some really large rocks will really make that tank "pop"
