how many severums in a 500 gallon (with tank mates) help :)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Severums tend to not get along with their own kind. I've never had more than 2 in a 240 gallon though. But in my LFS tanks, they have 8 severums in a 300 gallon, fin nipping galore.

I've got a lot of various young severums that get along with no fin nipping. All of the aggression I've seen is toward the same collection point, and even that is rare and spawning esque.

That would look amazing (8-10 of them )....ok ill go with 8 of them and hopefully show you how the tank looks sometime in march
Should be easy in your size tank imo. Like I said I had 8 adult rotkeils (bit smaller severum than some types) in a 135-- they did look good in a group. Knew someone years ago had something like 10 large adult gold severums in a 300, most of them 12 inch-ish, and thick, compared to my rotkeils which were more like 9 inches. The 300 gal severum tank, including a big L14 goldie pleco, was a great looking tank and they got along fine.

Thanks alot you seem to know what are your talking about..Like i said there are people who are against having too many severums in the same tank but i went with your advise honestly...I ditched the geophagus to add more severums in the tank...So 10 severums, one aro ,one flag tail and denison barbs should all have more than enough space in a 500 gallon imo...Thanks you for help bro and let me know what you guys think of this stocking list

Here is my 210 gallon with 11 adult severums, a chocolate cichlid, and a Hoplarchus psittacus.

As you can see, there's some mild chasing and pecking, but nothing serious. The only fish that show damaged fins are the female Heros notatus and that's because they despised each other and fought constantly, usually over the male. When I removed the females, all the males lived peacefully together.

That is, until the psittacus got a little larger and all hell broke loose, but that's another story.

Yeah, exactly. Of course, like most cichlids, you get individual temperaments and may get the occasional psycho individual, or two fish that just don't like each other. But yours are similar to heros groups I've kept or seen. No worse than a group of geos or discus or angels; actually, ime less than some angels I've kept together. Like most cichlids you can keep in groups it helps to have enough in the group so behavior is more about group dynamics than just two or three fish in each other's face all the time, which is ok for a bonded pair, not always so good for random individuals thrown together.

I was wondering about the psittacus once it grew. :)

Nice tank!

Out of curiosity what kind of severums do you have Ryan? I think I see some tapajos, and notatus for sure, but you have similar tastes and some sexy sevs. Whatever they were sold to you as, collection point seems to effect severums a great deal.

I have seen a few use the term "collection point"...I am still trying to figure out what that means is it where they meet in the tank or where they are from or something else ?
