I can see you being a sunfish guy jaws, Centrarchids are extremely similarly in both appearance and behavior to cichlids.

Hornwort, Jungle/American Val, Elodea, java moss, java fern, Najas, Rotala.

Would a dollar sunfish and an america flag fish work together in a 30 gal ? Maybe some white cloud minnows too

yes they would, but with any killifish watch for fin nipping. the sunfish SHOULD be able to deal with the killi but just a heads up. I had a mosquitofish in my 40B with my darters and bluegill. The bluegill was fine, but as soon as I put a coosae bass in the tank that mosquitofish chewed his tail right off lol.
 
Im gonna let my daughter choose ..shes two but hey she likes "pretty things".
