Visually speaking, more than 4 fish in a tank is too much.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
there are other ways then having one fish to make the fish a focal point. I have a painted back and bottom both black.. Bare bottom African tank. With black PVC Y pipe pillars. he fish POP against the all black

Super easy tank to clean and fish r focal.

Good idea!

These are Mayans, xCichlasoma uropthalmus.
They are mostly females and a smattering of subordinate males.
The dominant males are usually hiding in caves, and are monstrous. I saw the males when they'd break the surface to eat, or attack, although
I tried to follow one male as he crossed the length of the cenote, took about a minute to cross open water the size of a football field.

Are those festae ?

After a particularly trying day, I like to sit in front of my biotope with just driftwood and leaves and just stare at my fish.

It's such a sight for sore eyes! :)

I have to agree with Souzie here. My favorite tanks are biotopes. I have am continually planning and thinking of ways to enhance my african biotope. I only have 8 fish in it currently. But they are spread out throughout the water column, so any one area (top, middle bottom) is not devoid of life and activity.
I am always looking for different plants to enhance the whole aquascape of the tank. My idea of a great tank decoration is a crazy unique piece of driftwood.

Good topic, Redear. As someone posted above, I'd like to echo that this is where the artistic side comes out (or doesn't). We can all debate about the science, researches and factual data points in this hobby, but I think this is an area that is truly subjective and "in the eye of the beholder"...

I too prefer less fish relative to size of what the tank can actually accommodate, generally speaking.

Good thread for stimulating discussion. I like when people have and share preferences and opinions, I dislike when people try to impose their views on others. That said, personally I appreciate many different styles of tanks. I enjoy sparsely populated biotope tanks and appreciate well run borderline Jdm tanks.

I am in awe at some of the crazy bichir tanks in the polypterus section, the skill and maintenance displayed is impressive.

My tank I try to balence my desire to have a large variety of monster fish and a somewhat natural looking tank

How many fish do you think are in this tank? (Hint many more than four)
