Why do you think it would be bad to breed from this batch you got from rapps? Do you think they are all from the same family?

There is a very good probability they are related. Imagine a group of fish this small in the wild. Where did they begin their life? Odds are they were from the same parents & they stuck together in the wild because having more staying together increases each of their odds to survive. So then when the fisherman collects, odds are many, many of them are from the same 2 parents.

It is genes & numbers we are getting into here. Shoot, the thoroughbred race horse is the most inbred animal on earth! But you are talking very well thought out breedings through multiple generations & using only the highest quality individuals to get the end results. That is not what is done in the fish business. Inbreeding will create exaggerations in offspring. Some negative & some positive. Still all I am saying here is that you will have possibility of getting individuals with negative features in F1 (especially if it is inbred) F2 even more (if it is inbred again) & F3 again. (Using the example of all F1,2, &3 coming from 3 generations of the same batch. IF I wanted to breed my intermedia the smartest thing for me to do would probably get a fish from Boettner's batch to be bred to 1 of the 5 I got from Rapps. Better than breeding 2 of the 5 I got in this batch.

All these venders get their fish from the same source, or should I say most of them. Ever notice when one vender has sown rare fish chances are another one or two will have the same fish? Like your intermedia they most likely all came from the same source. It's not like there is 10 different people going out and catching these. It's more like one and then everyone gets a piece of the pie. So to say getting a fish from Boettners and one from Rapps has the same odds because they came from same net.

what? I don't get what u r saying. Boettners are obviously different intermedia from a different collection batch. His 2 that bred may or may not be from the same collection as each other but they definitely are not the same as mine from rapps.

All these fish come from same area. All this wild caught this and that is all hype so that they can charge you more and it works because you fall for it. It's all in the genes that determine a nice fish and even then you will have a few nice ones and a few not so nice ones.

You are incorrect: All the fish do not come from the same area.
You are correct: There are plenty of lies in regards to wild caught by vendors on here.
You are incorrect: There is a big difference in appearance if you get your hands on true wild caught.

You gotta learn yourself...

Tell that to all the people breeding captive bred Asian arrowana that are 10x better looking than any wild caught fish you will ever find. When you captive breed you can pick the best of the best and breed to get even better and better offspring- no different than with dogs, cats, horses or whatever. Sorry, you are incorrect.

At that size I'd say the saying "don't count your chickens before they hatch" goes a long way. Despite the fact these guys are hatched. Now the task for growing them out is the real challenge.

This is the guy who breed azuls, xingu, Kelberi etc.... He knows what he's doing. Granted I'm sure stuff does happen. His azuls and xingus are the ones that came here to the states when the drought of them was going on. Probably be a good assumption a lot went to Asia aswell.

I get your point about breeding for improvement in looks. BUT we are in the cichla section & that is not the case with this fish. There just are not enough being bred in captivity by breeders that actually improve the looks of individual types of cichla. That is why you see 8 of 10 new people on here buying farmies. The breeders stick multiple types of cichla in a pond & what breeds is what breeds.

Our topic was the quality of fish wild caught vs captive bred amd my point is if done right you can breed captive bred fish to look just as well as wild caught or even better if taken the time and done correctly- not throwing a bunch of different fish in a pond. I'm talking about throwing a bunch of the best looking particular species of fish in the same pond and breeding them- just like Asian arros. It can be done and that is my point.
There's already nice looking captive bred Zingus and Temensis, etc is there not?
