How do you fight the urge

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've narrowed my focus to continually improving the setups I have versus setting up droves of new tanks.

It's cheaper in the long run.

When I first got ornatum about 2 years ago, they were approximately 1" and
started growing them out in a 55 gal, just the 6 without any other fish.

I found them to be very aggressive with each other at that tiny size, as it appeared they were on the road to killing each other off.
I added 6 slightly larger Guianacara sp, and a few lemon tetras, overnight this was enough of a distraction to halt all intra-species aggression.
Within a year they were too large for the 55 and were moved to the 150.

I probably should have reduced the population of Guianacara, and not had any more than 10 fish in the 150, and it would have been much better if I had had even fewer.

In the second to last pic, what's the white fish with the two dark stripes?

Simply don't as long as I have money I have fish lol I'm a junior in high school and I don't really have to worry about bills or kids lol but I always make sure I never go over my limit on electricity and water!! But it is hard to I just bought a RTC and wasn't thinking long term so now I gotta upgrade to a 270 gallon pond.

Yeah i saw that thread. Not trying to preach but maybe rethink that stock. Unless the pond is under way i wouldnt do it not right for the fish its like living in a closet

I seldom go to LFSs, a majority are found with members of the Greater Chicago Cichlid Assn, or even more often with members of the local Milwaukee Aquarium Society.
We do group orders, and do a lot of trading within the group, and have mini-auctions of fry at every meeting, and at least 2 major auctions per year. Fish often end up being $1 or $2 each, if not less when acquiring large bags of fry.
I was able to get the Guianacara 20 juvies for $20 from a gcca member.
I also belong to the American Cichlid Assn and have traded with, or received cichlids from other members across the country.
and use on-line sources when I just can't wait, and something I want appears on a list, places like Wetspot, Jeff Rapps, Cichlids of the Americas etc etc

Although I'm downsizing because of an impending move, I have still have 25 species of cichlids in my tanks at the moment. Here is a breakdown of where they came from.
6 species-Milwaukee Aquarium Society
4 species -trade with members of Capital Cichlid Assn (Washington DC area)
3 species Greater Chicago Cichlid Assn
3 species Cichlids of the Americas
2 Wet spot
And of the above, at least 8 and another species, are also members of the American Cichlid Assn

I also keep 3 species of catfish from MAS members, 2 species of live bearers, and 2 species of killifish, also from MAS members
And koi and goldfish in my pond, from MAS members

Pretty impressive D

out of all if you could only keep one or two which would it be
