How do you fight the urge

Ours is natural gas. However I'm not going to use heated water from the tank. I found a few really hot spots around the bottom of the tank where the pilot light is. I'm going to see if I can catch that heat and bring it back to the tank. $0 to heat the tank if this works.

Interesting. If it does work, you'll definitely need to do a write up on this

Yeah but it would be nice to cover the elec for filtration/lighting too

In my experience you can filter and light a tank on very low power consumption. It's the heaters that's always been the deciding factor for me.

I'm using less then 100 watts to filter and light my 135. But 400 watts to just keep it heated.

Definitely the heating. Those Southeast Asian breeders needs to breed tropical fish that can thrive in cold temps and utilizes nitrate, then this hobby would be the best! haha

They sell copper coils at home depot. My plan is to run the coil under the hot water heater. (A few spots are hot enough to burn your hand) I'm going to go with low turnover with a disgusting amount of media. Probably a 1000 gph pump. It will split into a manifold so I can direct some flow to the heater coil and the rest will pass through some kind of ridiculous Diy filter.

I'm liking this idea, since I have a pilot light to utilize myself
