Dealing with a craigslist idiot.

I know this. tanks are usually a lot cheaper in the states unless you live in the middle of nowhere. At least that's the impression I get from the classifieds

generally yes, and I believe here in socal the concentration of fishkeepers is largest so the prices are way lower than say, Arkansas or something like that

I wish that were the case around here. More often than not I see 10 gal tanks being listed as huge and a bargain at the low low price of $250. Deals pop up every so often, but a lot of the tanks around here seem to be beat to crap and way overpriced.

I sold my 180 tank and stand for $100

and I sold my 110 tank and stand with two canister filters for $100

they obviously went quickly

When people lowball me they get moved to my own banned list. There are plenty of people on this forum even that I wouldn't sell fish to.

I'm sure we all have a list of these people. I'm also sure I'm I someone else's list.

I cant speak for elsewhere in the US, but the Chicago market at least tends to be over priced. I will say, I usually do not bother trying to talk people down on their CL ads, but vast majority are way over what I would consider paying. In addition to location it really does depend on who you are targeting. When the time comes to sell my tank, sure I may only be able to get $200 or $250 on MFK and probably less on CL. But over on Reefcentral rimless cubes are all the rage right now. As long as the tank is clean and in good shape I should have no issues getting a better price out of it.

supply and demand will vary depending on the geography

we're kind of saying the same thing, in that geography can dictate the cost due to the tendency of supply and demand

I know you are, there's just too many absolutes being thrown around on this thread by others. Like dollar per gallon. Very few areas have that on the regular. You can't quote "good deals" as the average deal when 95% the other listed deals aren't that low.

It very much dose varry upon location, i live in Windsor Ontario and the aquaculture is crap despite the great fishing activity there's just nothing for fish keeping. There's only 3 pet stores in Windsor. Two of them Are absolutely horrible for fish and one's decent even then the decent one is nothing special compared to your average store in the US, over here $800 is a good price for a new 120 gallon set up! (not including filters, substrate, or decor) You have to drive at least 2-4.5 hours away to get any decent monster fish such as rays, arowanas, or cichla (the LFS might contain the odd ray or arowana but they're all unhealthy and overpriced at $150 for a retic ray). But I do have to admit, in Canada there's more freedom to what we can keep legally since the water's too cold for invasive species. The only fish illegal to keep are snakeheads (channa) meanwhile in the US in each state there's certain cichlids you can't keep and stingrays too in certain states. but at least fish are more accessible in the US.
