Anyone else a geographical purist?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When I was at petco over winter, someone left a 17" rtc in a 5 gallon bucket in front of the store in -4º temps. Petco had it in the turtle tank for adoption. Me always wanting to get arowanas one day I saw my opportunity to get the reason to start my indoor pond. So for $5 the kitty kitty came home with me. Then I adopted the pacu and CK. However, I did ensure the CK go to a member.

I used to be a pretty staunch believer in keeping only fish together that live in the wild together but over the last few years I've fallen back from that a little.

I have 5 RBP's in a Rio Negro biotope.

I guess I'm a geographical purist...
I thought by rbp you were referring to red blood parrots haha but then I remembered I've seen you post phirania

The photo at top of list, the fish on the right; looks egg bound or impacted in some way. Do you suspect that to be a female(granted they hard to sex)

I was told she is female by the previous owner, her name is Wanda. I think she's just a big girl but i'll keep my eye on her.

Then definitely don't go to the Georgia Aquarium. Their big display has fish from around the globe. I personally don't have an issue with doing it at home since there are too many cool fish in the world that I want to own. Aggression is a whole other subject entirely. I have a blackbelt cichlid that doesn't tolerate my other blackbelt and I wouldn't mix them regardless of their origin. However, my roseline sharks are perfectly happy with my altum angels.

But I think that a public aquarium has a duty to educate people, as opposed to Georgia's motto of "the window to wow". It's a tough tradeoff though because they do need to attract and entertain visitors as well to keep the business going.

I'm not a purist I guess. If water quality, temp, ph, are all similar I usually will put fish together.
Usually I keep fish seperated by which continents they are from, the exception being some small docile community fish.

I've got fairly hard and alkaline water, it's sort of limiting to what I can keep in the first place.

I'm not much into biotopes but I like to keep my tanks looking as natural ad possible

I am a practical purist, if something needs to be moved from one tank to another, and it means mixing one continent with another I'll do it to stave off aggression, but must admit when I see old world fish mixed with new worlds, it always seems to to appear a bit goofy, and I try not to.
But I not only think new and old appears goofy, mixing many Central Americans with S Americans appears somewhat strange to me, there aggression levels are often very different, and needs quite different.
And mixing 2 of the same genus is often even more strange to me.
In nature it is very rare to find 2 species of Parachromis or 2 species of Vieja in the same habitat, unless man has introduced (managuense has been introduced all over Mexico and Central America where it is not normally found) or inadvertently combined them by connecting waterways, such as in the Panama canal. An example of such man induced mixing in that area, may be xC (Vieja) tuyrense and Vieja maculacauda.
