Ignorant Girl Kills Tortoise

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I see both sides of this debate haha.

No one should expect anyone to possess the same knowledge they do on a subject including wildlife. People's hearts are bigger than their brains sometimes and good intentions turn ugly at times when that's the case. Moving a turtle off a roadway doesn't take knowledge of the species, but chucking a turtle in a pond is a different story entirely.

That said if it was a tortoise, as I can't watch the video where I am currently, then its most likely dead. As I said mistakes, good intentioned or just plain dumb, happen and the world keeps spinning. If it was a federally endangered animal and this video is brought to the attention of a CO she could face some issues, or depending on her age, her parents may face that situation.

I think that if you really do want to save animals you should educate yourself about animals in your area or the area you wish to help first and learn what you should do instead of taking it upon yourself to guess what you should do

what I found funny with the girl is that she says she wants to save the animal and she just freaking chucks it into the water. at least take it closer to the water and lay it down nicely.

it's like me driving by a bum and pitching a fistful of change like a fast ball at them

What do I mean "exactly?" Red ear slider is "exactly" the most common turtle in the pet trade. How can I make that assumption? I did not make that assumption. You just need to get out more.

You made the assumption everyone knows that, wrooong.

I agree with this. If you noticed it looked like the pond might of had a bunch of plants around it, and I can't imagine this girl would go that far for a turtle.

Just to clear some things up, I don't live in the USA, or anywhere close. I live in Australia. Here we need licenses to keep reptiles and amphibians and I THINK (don't hold me to this) that we're only allowed to keep very common native species of turtles, - again, don't hold me to this. I live on a tiny island at the bottom of the country, where the government won't give you a license for turtles and tortoises, we have no native ones on my tiny island either. Also, I've never left my tiny island, oh, once when I was a kid, but that's it. :)

I never claimed to have an extensive knowledge on turtles and tortoises, I said that I had a decent amount of knowledge on my local wildlife, meaning the wildlife on my tiny island, and that I could distinguish a turtle from a tortoise - two animals that I've never seen in real life, only ever on tv and online. I stated at the very start that I have never actually seen a tortoise or a turtle.

I don't think the girl should be cuffed and thrown in a cell, it was an honest mistake where good intentions went wrong. However I think someone (parents maybe?) should be teaching kids about this kind of stuff, particularly if they have native species, and want to help them. I think that most people - especially those with native species, should be able to tell the difference, or at least be able to take a good guesstimate, that doesn't mean everyone should be able to look at the creature and say "oh, that's 'X' species, its breeding habits are..." That means that MOST people should be able to look at it and say "hmmm, I think it might be a turtle/tortoise"..

I think that the biggest problem is the way she puts the creature in the pond, why not beside the pond? I agree with SumoNinja, 100%, I'm just not as good at explaining myself as he is. Again, I'm not trying to argue, at all, whatsoever :)

So you know what everyone knows? Who's making the assumption now?

If you read the news article, a month before she did that, there were a few incidents people release those same tortoise into the ocean to save them. I'm not sure how truthful is that article, but when it come to turtle, majority will know them as red ear slider, some will recognize them as sea turtle from watching Finding Nemo, a few will recognize them as TMNT, or Squirtle. As for getting close to the water and place it down nicely, she lives it Gator land. I wouldn't blame her for not getting close to the water.
