Hi guys,

i am thinking in setting up my new fishroom.

I want to make the filtration of the tanks by an air punp to drive the sponge filters. I will keep big Central and South American cichlids, also African Cichlids, like Hoplarchus, Hypselecara, Motaguensis, Umbees, Cichla Monoculus, Uarus, Festae, Frontosas, etc...

I will have to suplly at the begining:

4 racks that includes: 24x 10 gallon tanks on top
4x 90 gallon tanks on middle
8x 40 gallon tanks on bottom

In the future i will add my big thanks to:

1 rack : 1x 180 gallon tank on top
1x 90 gallon on bottom

1 rack: 1x 150 gallon tank on top
1x 70 gallon tank on bottom

1x 130 gallon on a stand

1 rack: 6x 10 gallon tanks on top
1x 90 gallon tanks on middle
2x 40 gallon tanks on bottom

I was thinking in having a linear piston air pump, because of the low noise and high durability.

I was told that NewPondMaster AP 100 is the right choise for my fishroom... unfortunetly i live in Portugal and in Europe i cant find it. The pumps that i have here are:

Can you help me chosing the right pump for my fishroom? Il have pairsto breed in the 90 gallons and in the 180 Gallon Cihcla monoculus. The 10s for fry and the 40s for grow. Can i filter them only by sponge filters? How many for each?

Thanks guys

i would suggest buying the biggest air pump you can afford. I bought one for my fishroom that was the "perfect size" and ended up needing more air a week later. Sponge filters will work fine for the tanks. My fishroom is 90% filtered by sponge or air driven filters.

Thanks for the reply guys,

asteele, i think i have around 80 outlets, i was thinking buying a 100LPM pump, you think i should buy like 120LPM or even 150LPM?

From what i read, normaly the amount of LPM is the sames as outlests, meaning, 100LPM for 80 to 100 outlets.

Another thing, in my 130g and 180g should i use 4 or 5 sponges? 90g 3 sponges?

Thanks again!

Depends on how large the sponge filters are and stocking density. I will defer to John on the final size of air pump. Just keep expansions and additional outlets you might need in the future.

I also had a difficult time figuring out what size air pump I needed and called John from Jehmco and told him how many tanks I wanted to run, the maximum heights of the tanks and the number of anticipated filters I planned on running. He figured out the air flow I needed quickly and suggested a pump size which is working out perfectly with some air to spare.
