Armatus ID? Still Black (Hydrolycus wallacei)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Why aren't see imported, people obviously catch them, is there a ban on importing and exporting in there location? Or just not a demand?

Data deficient to be honest. I'd kill for an answer for this myself! lol

I hypothesize that it is likely that they're simply not bothered to be collected, most likely a location thing. The scombs, tats, cynos and rhaphs seem to be bycatch from cichlid fishers that are imported, armatus obviously has a demand of its own, and wallacei...? I'd guess that they live somewhere that has desirable fish, but there's no reason to go there to get the desirable fish under normal circumstances, so we don't see them as bycatch.

If the exporters actually realize that there's a market, I guarantee we'll see them.

Perhaps fugupuff fugupuff could shed some light on this matter? If anyone would know, its him!

Look at this one, looks almost identical to mine.
As far as the scales being bigger I would have to say they are larger, but only by a bit. They look about the same size under the pectoral fins but as you go up above the fins the black ones scale stay the same size and the normal Armatus scales become smaller. So I guess they are larger.
Hopefully I can get the pics up soon. Trying to get some decent ones. Might get another video too.

What you're describing on the scales perfectly matches my understanding of the reality of Hydrolycus wallacei from what I've read in the literature. If you could get a good shot of the teeth to confirm that they're not the huge armatus fangs, we could probably call this on confirmed!

Edit- something else that I've noticed on wallacei is a unique trait with their caudal point (the spike on the tail). On wallacei, it appears as though this caudal point is generally on the tail in a place where if you devided it into thirds, the spike would be at the top of the bottom third. This is what I see on your fish as well. On tats and armies, this spike is generally in the middle, and on scombs, it is absent.

Looking forward to seeing some teeth shots.

Could only get the black one to eat tonight., and could not get any pics of its mouth open but got a feeding video. I'll keep trying for a better video on the normal amry so you can really see the size different

I think we can call it, boys. That's wallacei.

Probably tomorrow, I'm going to update the Payara guide with pics of this fish and new info. furcifer158 furcifer158 if you have anything you'd like to add, let me know and it'll go into the guide.

Hard to say but teeth look smaller
