Armatus ID? Still Black (Hydrolycus wallacei)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I figure this is an isolated incident but I hope more Wallacei find there way into the hobby. It's weird being the only one with one. Can't compare size or aggression or really any characteristics. The wallacei is by far the aggressor of my tank, and has always been chasing the armatus around since day one.

Similar have come they before. Just haven't seen it long term. Always been ID'd as a dark Armatus. Thought it was a regional thing. The other thing is if stays small then similar to scombs and Armatus if reaches a certain size and dies then wouldn't think too much about. Likely think oh well another Armatus died.

This is pretty neat.It reminds me of DB junkie and the rare characin he had a few years ago.If I remember correctly it came in as an armatus but clearly was not.

There absolutely ARE dark armatus out there, that probably are regional morphs. This one is different though, its more than color. There are significant morphological differences as well; there's more in play that simply allopatry.

No worries it was meant as a joke. I know better trust me.
Lol I was talking about the price, cause I'd rather him keep it then get rid of it for some amount of money someone says it's worth. Not saying he's one of these type of people, but a lot of times people seem like they're gonna keep a fish (or something in general) and end up selling it for that price someone said it was worth. I get his curiosity though. And if he were to get rid of it, whoever it's to I'd hope they're active on here and can provide a good home for it. But I say take the fish for what it is, and leave it at priceless and appreciate it, ya know? I mean it's yours though, of course you can do what you want with it. This is just my view/opinion on it. Hopefully they'll become more available to the hobby soon. Maybe some come in as armatus from time to time and just get ID'd wrong and no one knowledgeable looks at it to see. Who knows lol

No need to worry about me selling it. But I would take $20k lol. I'm excited to be the only know owner, as of now, so just be prepared to see a ton of videos and pictures in the near future.

Does seem to have an interesting head shape, dark color, and smaller teeth. Also seems to have a personality more similar to tats or Scombs rather then armatus.

Every other body feature looks exactly like an armatus though. Tail size looks the same as armatus, fin placement also looks like armatus... Very interesting, i would love to see this guy in person

Any chance you can get someone to get some dslr pics?

I'll try to get some dslr pics for you.

The tail fin is smaller than the armatus along with the pelvic fins. Both are more rounded too. The adipose fin looks a bit different too not just the color. I can't really pinpoint why it look weird to me yet. I'll try to get pics of these too.
